State is not obvious from the first look.

Version: 4.0 (using KDE 4.8.0)
OS: Linux

The "muted" icon (especially in KMix OSD, when the background - window content - is often white) is really hard to recognize and even confusing.

I am always unable to determine current state just by checking the icon - so I must turn the mute on/off to be sure whether the sound is muted or not, so I guess it is clearly usability problem.

I suggest adding something like "crossed mark" above it, which will make the muted state icon more obvious.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Mute or onmute the volume
2. The KMix OSD is shown
3. The muted state is not easy to recognize from the icon

Expected Results:
Show more obvious icon.

screenshot please wich icon are we talking about kmix in the try plasma, or app oxygen icon?
Comment 2 Ondrej Machulda 2012-01-28 17:50:36 UTC
I am talking about the "Speaker" icon, which is on the left of the screenshot. The "muted" state (the upper one) is not clearly recognizable from the "not muted" state (the bottom one).

aaaa sorry :) did not noteced the original screenshoot :)
any way its a plasma icon, and nott beeing used as it should ... the mute icon in plasma is just the outline of the icon and we cant see the sound waves...Like you see on the system tray
Assign this bug to plasma devs..

cheers

Well, in systray there is exactly the same icon as in the OSD, with the same width. And it is also hard to recognize it there (but the contrast is higher there, because there is usually not white background).

So I think, this is not related to plasma...?
Comment 5 pinheiro 2012-01-29 20:24:10 UTC
also wich kde version are you using? i remember making the muted plasma icon larger from a previus bug...

The one you show in your screnshot is not what I kde 4.5 and 4.6

After some more investigation apparently the bug was introduced in 4.8 so you have a point, however it was not me that operated the change, so you need to assign this bug over to plasma people...

cheers
Comment 7 Ondrej Machulda 2012-01-30 21:17:06 UTC
Well, I can't reassign it - can you :)?
Comment 8 Mark 2012-07-19 23:49:27 UTC
Re-assigning to plasma upon request.

Confirming this on KMix 4.1 using KDE 4.8.5.

SOLUTION - When muted, volume should be set to zero everywhere (dbus, OSD, KMix, etc) but its last value rememberd and restored on future unmuting action.

Andrei: this bug report is already about a version ahead of yours, if you want to confirm something you should run at least that version.

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
