Description Guido Schmidt 2011-03-17 22:29:12 UTC
Version: 1.0 (using KDE 4.6.1)
OS: Linux

The "General"-Tab has a warning: "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:" But no issues are displayed.

The "Enable desktop effects" checkbox is enabled, but inactive.

Composing State: "Desktop effects are active"

The list of effects on the "All Effects"-Tab is empty.

"Advanced"-Tab: Compositing type is set to XRender. Trying to set it to OpenGL failes with the error-message:

"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values.

Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type."

Desktop effects are indeed working.

I remember sometime in the past everything worked normally.

Reproducible: Always

OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop
Compiler: gcc
Distribution: OpenSUSE 11.4
Graphics-driver: Nouveau

This bug already existed with
 OpenSUSE 11.3
 KDE 4.5.x
 proprietary NVidia-driver
on the same machine.

I found a workaround (mentioned in bug 250865) by setting OpenGLIsUnsafe key to false in ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc.

So the real bug is saving this key once and forever instead of tying it to the version of the piece of software (graphics-driver?) that caused the error.
