Description csab3063 2001-05-20 20:47:34 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: kmail
Version: 1.2.1 (using KDE 2.2.0 \6alpha1)
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: SuSE
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release)
OS: Linux (i586) release 2.4.2-4GB
OS/Compiler notes:

IMAP: outgoing mail is not saved on IMAP-server directory "sent" but locally only. There should be an option to enable saving of outgoing mail on IMAP-server directory "sent" only.

This has created a problem here as well with a KMail client that will not
start up (crash on startup reported seperately). Only copy of an important
message is unretrieveable because it's stuck in non-startable KMail

I'm not sure which bug report you are referring to but
KMail stores it's messages in plain text so you can always
look at the folder files in ~/Mail and the .*.directory
subdirectories with a text editor.

I should actually withdraw this as the problem was not a KMail problem after
all but another mail client.

However if KMail does this too it is a problem. The whole idea of IMAP is
that all of your mail is on the server and you are client/platform
independent; you can have full mail function from any machine capable of
connecting to the server. If a client stores some mail on the local machine
this defeats the mobility that IMAP intends.

While it may be a prefectly acceptable and logical option it should be a
configurable option so that a site with a full IMAP implementation can use
KMail.

Hello KMail Developers

I would like to see this added functionality too.
I want to keep all my mail centrally on the server and accessible through
IMAP. Currently using KMail I regularly go the the "sent-mail" folder and
drag all mails from there and drop them on my IMAP "Sent" folder manually.

Also for "Drafts" "Trash" "Outbox" this functionality is welcome.
Netscape Mail already has the option to do this maybe you can
look at it as an example for this functionality.

B.T.W. Thanks for the work on KMail ! It's already a very good
e-mail program. I just ditched Netscape Mail in favour of KMail
since KMail now supports IMAP.

Best regards

Eric

I want "Drafts" "Trash" "Outbox" on IMAP too. And preferably
not any local storage in ~/Mail - I don't need it and prefer
not to have any. Or at least not display any ~/Mail folders
on screen.

I think this feature needs more documentation to be considered "fixed". I consider
myself an advanced user, and I can't find how to enable to feature (in Kmail 1.5,
distributed with KDE 3.1 RC 6). I tried the following:
  1. checking the Properties dialog of the current "sent-mail" folder.
  2. checking the Properties dialog of the potential "sent-mail" folder on my IMAP server.
  3. checking the "Folders" section in the preferences.
  4. Reading the documentation.

I couldn't find anywhere in the documentation that mentioned this, but I did find this
sentence that seemed to imply it might not be possible:

"Note that most properties are only available for your own folders and not for default
folder like inbox etc.. "

I suggest re-opening the bug until the documentation or the UI is clearer. Thanks!

You can set your sent-mail and drafts-folder in your identity.
