Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.2)
OS: Linux

First of all, let me tell you that what I am writing here is a new feature request for KDE.

More often what happens is that due to some system maintainance I am forced to reboot my system. What I would like to see is an option for saving and restoring a KDE application that I am currently using.

This could be another button like the close window button on top of the window.

Another use of this feature is when you do not have enough RAM to run a new application. At this point, you should be able to save some of your low priority apps and continue with your work until you complete the work.

systemsettings > System Administration > Startup & Shutdown > Session Management > On Login > Restore previous session

If an application does not support session management, you should file a bug for that application separately.

Please confirm that mentioned option solves your issue, or if I have misunderstood the request.

I am aware that applications have some level of support for session save/restore which is invoked when we logout/login a KDE session.

But, what I am requesting for is different. I would like the save/restore feature to be exposed on all KDE apps to the end user so that he can do it manually on the application when he would like to. He or she does not have to logout from a KDE session to save state of an application.

I would like to see the 'save state' as a standard feature on all KDE applications (like the close button we have on the top right corner of the window). And, whenever the user attempts to start an application, the Plasma shell can actually provide the user with the list of saved sessions of the application from which he can choose the session that he prefers to restore.

Thanks for the clarification. Please add your comment or vote to bug 154670.

A related request is bug 62157 which also talks about improved per-session management, and even has links to recent research projects.

... improved per-_application_ session management :)
