I have a large directory hierarchy with mp3s in it and tried to open that in the playlist editor but it crashed noatun.

This bug is either impossible or a Qt bug.  Maybe try updating Qt versions.

I'll rebuild QT as soon as an updated version hits the ports collection and 
let you know what happens.
