Description Mohd Asif Ali Rizwaan 2010-09-13 22:19:16 UTC
Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.1)
OS: Linux

Please add "places" (sidebar entries) in 'copy to' and 'move to' submenu for real quick copy pasting of files/folders.

this will especially useful for quick copying to usb/flash disk; and to move/copy a file to a 'backup' (frequently accessed) folder(s).

Thanks.

Reproducible: Always

OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.35-ARCH
Compiler: gcc

Yes that would be nice - but only if the user can decide which entries to show. As it is for dolphin's places sidebar it should be possible to exclude places entries. This should be independent from the settings for dolphin's places sidebar.

I think this is only useful for removable rewritable media in case the quick copy/move entry is browsable as quick access menu as is the entry for home. For all other places entries you can always use dolphin's sidebar to drag files onto the folders in it.

Resetting assignee to default as per bug #305719

Just for the record, there are at least two possible workarounds:

1. The Copy To/Move To menus have a 'Browse...' entry which opens a dialog from which you can easily navigate to the 'Places'.

2. In KDE 4.10, if you enable 'Open folders during drag operations' in the settings, you can drag items to an entry in the Places Panel and wait a bit to open that entry in the view.

I admit I never used the "Browse" entry in the copy/move to submenus, just because I have to click. And when you want to access something on a removable media via that dialog you also have to click, click, click until you find it. The quick access fly-out menus are more comfortable IMHO. Therefore it would be nice to have the places there too, at least the removable rewritable media in the in the quick list as base like home and /.

Your "workarounds", Frank, are true but it is kind of saying we don't need those quick access copy/move menus at all because we can always divide the dolphin menu to drag and drop files.

No, I'm not saying that. The menus are still useful for quickly moving/copying something to subfolders of your home directory.

In any case, the code for those menus is not even part of Dolphin at all, so I cannot decide if that is going to be changed anyway. It has been brought to my attention in bug 311084 that a patch for implementing this has been submitted some time ago:

https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/102657/

I'll add some info there, including the serious side effects that showing the 'Places' in the menus might have, like freezing the entire application for several seconds. (Just to prevent that anyone blames me for not replying earlier to the review request: I was not responsible for reviewing Dolphin patches at the time when it was submitted, and moreover, it's not a Dolphin issue at all, as I said).

Well, it's difficult for a user to see if a feature that appears in an application actually belongs to that application or not ;).

The copy/move to quick access is very useful and regarding the (not yet fully) mentioned side effects like slowing down the menu/the application/workflow because of a temporary freeze - I'd prefer not to have the places in the menu... That would prevent me from using the menu if I had to wait for it a few seconds.

Maybe instead of "Places" the user could get the option to put own filesystem bookmarks into that menu?
