Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.5.0)
OS: Linux

When I log-in in my kubuntu 10.04 the shadow of a window appears in the background in the desktop. If I stop kwin effect that window desappear. If I restart Kwin effect the window doesn't appear.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
I don't know how reproduce it. It appears at the system start-up.
I know how eliminate that window:
-go to desktop effect
-click on "suspend desktop effects"
-click on "Resume desktop effects"
The window is desappeared.

Reassigning, since I am seeing it when starting "plasma-desktop" (after kquitapp'ing it).

To reproduce, you have to use a window decoration that does NOT have its own shadows, i.e. anything but NOT Oxygen, Aurorae, Bespin, or Smaragd. Then enable Shadow plugin in desktop effects.

Then at startup of plasma, the shadow of a window appears as mentioned in this bug report.

Reproduced on todays trunk.

can you xwininfo this phantom?
Comment 3 Christoph Feck 2010-08-26 12:02:27 UTC
Impossible... human reaction is too slow, when you see the shadow, and want to click on it, it has already disappeared.

But the size is approximately a quarter of my screen (which is 1024x768), and there is no backfill rendered, i.e. only the shadow is visible.
Comment 4 Luca 2010-08-26 16:59:37 UTC
Yes, also for me the window is a quarter of the screen, and it appears always in that place, the top-left corner as you can see in the picture. I can't move it, I can't select it. You can't delete it just passed on it another window. For eliminate it I have to suspend and resume the desktop effects.
Comment 5 Christoph Feck 2010-08-26 18:06:12 UTC
Luca, then you are seeing a different window than me. Please run "xwininfo" in Konsole, click on the offending window, and add the output to this bug.
Comment 6 Luca 2010-08-26 23:53:38 UTC
This is the output:

xwininfo: Please select the window about which you
would like information by clicking the
          mouse in that window.

xwininfo: Window id: 0x1c00982 "plasma-desktop"

  Absolute upper-left X: 0
  Absolute upper-left Y: 0
  Relative upper-left X: 0
  Relative upper-left Y: 0
  Width: 1280
  Height: 800
  Depth: 24
  Visual: 0x21
  Visual Class: TrueColor
  Border width: 0
  Class: InputOutput
  Colormap: 0x20 (installed)
  Bit Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
  Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
  Backing Store State: NotUseful
  Save Under State: no
  Map State: IsViewable
  Override Redirect State: no
  Corners: +0+0 -0+0 -0-0 +0-0
  -geometry 1280x800+0+0

This output seems to be the desktop. All I can tell you is that this "shadow" there wasn't in kde release 4.4.5.
Comment 7 Christoph Feck 2010-08-27 17:02:24 UTC
For me it is the panel. When I unlock widgets, and invoke "Add Panel > Empty Panel" menu item from desktop, then I see this window in default size appearing, then moving to the new panel location. It may have something to do with the fact that I do not use a theme where the shadow is part of the graphics, so KWin draws its own shadow.

The panel window, however, should not be made visible before its placement is decided.
