Description Martin Steigerwald 2010-03-26 12:05:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.4.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

After plasma shuffles around my activities at will (see bug #232171 and bug #232203) I want to clean up the mess. But now Plasma doesn't let me.

I have four activities, each one on one desktop:

+---------------- +----------------+
| 1: Information | 2:Documents |
| | |
| | |
+-----------------+----------------+
| 3:Communication | 4:System |
| | |
| | |
+-----------------+----------------+

Plasma put a generic activity named "Arbeitsfläche" where I want to have and where has been "Documents" before as I wanted to fix that Plasma shuffled around Communication and System by selecting Communication for desktop 3 and Systems for desktop 4. On selecting Communication for desktop 3 Plasma selected System for desktop 4 and "Arbeitsfläche" for desktop 2.

Now I wanted to set "Documents" for desktop 2 again. Thus I went to desktop 2, chose "Verkleinern" (zoom in) and wanted to zoom out to the "Documents" activity - the one with he red leaf background. But Plasma didn't provide a zoom out handle it. I provide a screenshot.

So Plasma messed up my activity setup and doesn't let me correct it.

Expected results:

Plasma lets me select the activity I want to have on the desktop. Again Plasma should let *me* decide. I *know* what I am doing.

BTW I have seen similar bugs in KDE 4.3 upto 4.3.4.

half of the original size cause of the 1MB attachment limit

After logout and login again Plasma finally provided that handle and I set the Documents activity for desktop 2. Now my setup is back as I wished it to have and this survived at least one logout and login cycle in order to save that setup.

In KDE 4.3.5 I could select "different activity on each desktop".
In KDE 4.4.1 the default is "same activity on each desktop". I cannot choose "different activity ..." anymore.
In my TwinView system I added 2 autohide panels with an activity bar widget. Switching activities works as you would expect it.

You can find this setting in systemsettings (Systemeinstellungen):

"Virtuelle Arbeitsflächen" under "Unterschiedliche Aktivitäten für jede virtuelle Arbeitsfläche"

roughly translated: "virtual desktops" under "different activities for each virtual desktop"

I still prefer that settings cause I want to group applications and plasmoids together. Just switching the plasmoid collection doesn't make much sense to me.

I want to have system related plasmoids like cpu / memory monitoring on my system activity where I also have a konsole opened for system administration. I like disk free space monitoring on my documents activity where I work with documents / files and have dolphin running. I like information related plasmoids like weather plasmoid (if it would work correctly... see bug #232469) on my information activity where I have my webbrowser. And so on.

TwinView with 2 panels with activity bar and "different activities for each
virtual desktop" does not work yet as you would expect it.
Without using "cashew-symbol > minimize" I would like to change activity names, configure activities, choose activities on left or right monitor. This is not yet possible.

Future Example
Activities: A1, A2, A3
          Left monitor: Right monitor:
Desktop:
1 A1 A2
2 A1 A3
3 A1 A2

But this needs a different design, I guess.

The activity overview has been replaced completely in 4.5, so this bug is no longer valid.
