Description Ionut Lucaci 2010-03-09 13:57:27 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.4.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Archlinux Packages

When I click the button that expands the system tray widget and shows the hidden icons, they overlap with the digital clock widget next to the system tray. Image demonstrating behaviour: http://i49.tinypic.com/52yy6f.png

fix in 4.5 (not back-portable)
Comment 2 Ionut Lucaci 2010-03-09 21:08:10 UTC
this behavior takes place absolutely every time... it is perfectly repeatable, and for the lifetime of an entire release, kde will have this bug just screaming to end users "unstable, unpolished, unprofessional"...
even though it does not affect functionality, an element of the user interface that enjoys as much attention, from all the users of the environment, is left without even the intention of being fixed?!? do you call this a production release?
if it were some obscure widget that does not come on the default desktop when you install it, I'd find this understandable ... but this is the system tray for christ's sake, and the bug happens every damn time!

as i already said, it is fixed for 4.5.

if you wish to submit a patch that improves it in the 4.4 branch, we'd welcome the contribution. but as our manpower is limited, while we work on improving things as much as we can, we simply do not have the ability to backport every set of changes to the previous release branch (in which case we'd just stop working in branches altogether, wouldn't we?)

one more thing: the tone taken in your comments is completely out of line. we have a code of conduct in KDE:

     http://www.kde.org/code-of-conduct/

if you wish to engage with us here or elsewhere, you are expected to do your best to follow the spirit embodied in that document. your comments failed to do so on several counts.

thanks ...

yeah well I got a bit carried away, and I apologize for that... it does not really affect me, as i can do my work regardless of this bug, but the same can be said of gnome... it just works... the problem is i really want open source to have a nicely designed gui, and as of now kde is the only desktop environment heading in that direction... i want people not to have an "wow this stuff is free(gratis)? it's almost as good as windows/mac! maybe i'll install it on my third computer until i can cough up enough money to UPGRADE to windows" attitude , and that's why i keep showing my shiny kde desktop to everyone I can... but subconsciously, the devil is in the details... i hope you get my frustration, and sorry for breaking the code of conduct... if you find it necessary, please proceed with banning my account... i'll keep using kde anyway even if i can't report any bugs :)

i don't think it's necessary, just try not to do this again. we all want the same thing here, as you noted, and we should be encouraging and supporting each other towards that goal not picking on each other about it.

particularly when it's about issues we've already spent the time fixing.

cheers, and here's to an awesome 2010 for free software on the desktop ..
