Description derrickm 2001-03-08 09:28:58 UTC
(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***)

Package: konqueror
Version: KDE 2.1.0
Severity: wishlist
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs
Compiler: Mandrake-supplied RPMs
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Not Specified

In the Toolbar there are three side-by-side buttons that all use a graphic of a magnifying glass. These are 'Find' 'Increase Font Sizes' and 'Decrease Font Sizes'. They are distinguished only by the tiny pawprints plus sign and minus sign indicating the function of each button. They are also slightly crowded together.

Determining which button is which is less than intuitive. I have accidentally clicked on the Find button twice so far when I was trying to increase the font size.

Would it be possible/prudent to change the Increase/Decrease Font Size graphics to a growing/shrinking capital letter (like in the font control panel)? That way they would clearly stand out from the Find button.

The only problem I can think of is with internationalizing them to reflect different character sets.

Comment 4 Bojan 2005-05-06 00:27:24 UTC
Text was missing.

For Increase/Decrease Font Size:
Icon of capital letter "A" with arrow up for "Increase" and small letter with arrow down for "Decrease". Like in Nvu.

And/or
Icon of binoculars for find, like in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Comment 5 James Richard Tyrer 2005-05-07 18:51:13 UTC
These icons have merit.

I note that the icons for "Enlarge Font" and "Shrink Font" would need to have new names since the icons: "viewmag+" and "viewmag-" are probably used for other things as well. This would mean that the Konqueror code would need to be changed as well. So, I suggest that they be called:

view_font+
view_font-
view_search

I also note that the first two need a little work. Look at them at high magnification, or did you have sub-pixel AA turned on when you made the screen shot? Please post the actual icons to kde-artists@mail.kde.org
Comment 6 Bojan 2005-05-07 21:40:59 UTC
If you are referring to pictures I posted, they are not actual images to be included in KDE. They are just here to show what I meant.
Comment 7 FiNeX 2008-05-21 12:34:16 UTC
The new default artwork (oxygen) for KDE4 implements this graphics.
Shouldn't this report be closed?
Comment 8 Jakob Petsovits 2008-05-21 14:18:16 UTC
True, Oxygen uses a binocular for "Search" and magnifier glasses for "Zoom" actions. That would satisfy this request. Good catch, FiNeX!
Comment 9 James Richard Tyrer 2008-05-21 21:35:51 UTC
This has only been partially fixed.
Comment 10 Jakob Petsovits 2008-05-23 11:26:43 UTC
Reopening, in order to be able to assign to the Konqueror devs. The icon theme part is fine, it's now up to the Konqueror devs to use the appropriate icons.
Comment 11 Jakob Petsovits 2008-05-23 11:30:34 UTC
Reassigning to the Konqueror devs.

KDE 4 icon themes, including Oxygen, provide icons named format-font-size-less and format-font-size-more. Those should be used for the "increase/decrease font sizes" actions, while real "zoom in"/"zoom out" actions (zooming images as well as fonts) should use the zoom-in and zoom-out icons.
Comment 12 James Richard Tyrer 2008-05-29 05:31:30 UTC
I can fix this.

Screen Shot showing the problem with Oxygen icons.

The original problem still exists. It is very difficult to determine which is which with the magnifying glass icons.
Comment 16 Jonas Vejlin 2009-06-19 21:18:26 UTC
In kde 4.2.4 the icons have changes compare to the icons in #15. Now it is more clear what they are. Sugestion that the bug is closed unless other people do not agree
Comment 17 FiNeX 2009-08-16 15:52:13 UTC
I agree with Jonas.

Sorry to say that this is not true.

Current Oxygen magnifying glass icons 16x16

While it is true that the icon for search has been changed and the new icons have been created for enlarge and shrink font, the fact is that the magnifying glass icons have not changed. This attachments shows that they are exactly the same as in Comment #15.

So, although improvements have been made, this bug which is about the "Magnifying Glass" icons has not been fix and it should be reopened.
