Description Dima Ryazanov 2009-11-09 23:34:33 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.3)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

No idea what causes it, but sometimes, Alt-F2 stops bringing up the "run command" dialog. Changing the shortcut doesn't make a difference.

If I right-click the desktop and select "Run Command...", the dialog appears after a few seconds, and Alt-F2 works afterwards.

On Arch (KDEmod) I have the same problem.

Every now and then Alt+F2 stops working and won't bring up krunner. I get it working again by running it manually from the terminal where it will work fine afterwards too. The "Run Command..." on the desktop works too (thanks for that tip Dima Ryazanov).

I notice that after I get it running there is a krunner process that stays resident. There may be a silent crash going on here, but I will need to check if that process is hanging around after just logging in. (Don't use Ctrl+Esc System Activity because it is a part of krunner)

When I first log in there is a krunner process. I suspect that it is either crashing silently (in which case this is a symptom of another bug probably already filed (but which one?)) or it isn't loading at startup every now and then.

Same problem here (KDE 4.4.0, Nepomuk running), same workaround (desktop context menu) helps.
Comment 4 Joel 2010-03-05 11:15:28 UTC
Same here. Thanks for the tips for bringing it back!
Running 4.4.0 with Arch.
Comment 5 Joseph Tate 2010-05-07 18:05:18 UTC
Happening for me now with 4.4.2 packages from Kubuntu 10.4. Wasn't happening in 4.2.2 (Kubuntu 9.10).

I don't think it's a silent crash because the krunner application is still running according to ps. If I killall krunner and restart from the terminal or launcher menu, it works again for a while.

It happened to me twice since I upgraded yesterday. Seems to be after some period of desktop inactivity, but I'm not sure about that.

I can confirm that this happens for me as well on Kubuntu 10.4. The workaround mentioned by everyone else seems to be the current solution. Most of the time it happens after I have returned from a longer period of inactivity, as far as I have seen it hasn't happened while I have been working with the computer actively.

Same here on KDE4.8.4/OpenSUSE12.1
Comment 8 Myriam Schweingruber 2012-09-07 02:37:01 UTC
Thank you for the feedback, setting status to confirmed.

Same issue with KDE 4.10 on ArchLinux.

When this happens again, run following command in konsole to see where krunner appears:

$ qdbus org.kde.krunner /App display

If krunner doesn't appear, use gdb to see where it is stuck.

$ gdb -p `pidof krunner`
gdb > bt

None of the suggested fixes work for me. I tried to create a custom Global Shortcut, but Custom Shortcuts in Shortcuts and Gestures in System Settings ignores the left Alt key and says, "The key you just pressed is not supported by Qt." when I try to use the right Alt key. I had to use the F2 key by itself. This should be a high priority fix. If Microsoft can make something similar work, this should be a no brainer.

I'm on Kubuntu having very similar problems. I have noticed this on previous versions of Kubuntu/KDE, especially on Plasma Netbook, but I have never found a solution for this problem once it crops up. Even removing my .kde folder does nothing.

When the problem happens, it seems to affect all global shortcuts. Alt-F2 does not work. Ctrl-Esc does not work. Ctrl-Alt-L does not work.

If I go into a terminal window and type Alt-F2, a letter Q appears.

I have no idea what is going on or how to fix it. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, it should probably be noted. I am on Kubuntu 13.04 with KDE 4.10.2 installed. I just upgraded and the problem presented itself from the first boot.

I wanted to post days ago, but forgot it.

Have a look to the thread bellow.

It's doing it again in KDE 4.11.2. I'm running Kubuntu 13.10 Saucy (developer release). I have about 25 of the plugins installed in Krunner. All but YouTube, Wikipedia, and WikiTravel were selected by default. I just disabled Calendar Events and Contacts because I don't want to accidentally start Akonadi, which I really hate because it eats up my CPU and makes my computer really slow.

I observe this behavior since Kubuntu 14.04.
In one machine, it has stopped working completely after an update.
Comment 18 Sebastien Renard 2014-09-26 16:54:20 UTC
i confirm that behaviour with 4.13.3 (build from sources). The workaournd (right click on desktop and execute command) works.

Fixed with Plasma 5.
