Description Lukas 2009-10-02 01:05:44 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.3.1)

In Amarok2.2.0 we have a great new feature of multiple collections. This feature works well with MP3 players and small flash cards.

However it became useless for users having their collection on external HDD. Adding it to regular collection is not an option, since Amarok detects and removes files when it is ran not having HDD plugged in.

But it is hardly usable as removable collection too, since Amarok scans ALL HDD looking for music. In my personal case (and I believe I'm not the one) I keep most of my music in my external 1TB HDD. But same HDD holds millions of other files including sources. Only scanning though those file takes a lot of time, validating it as music, takes ages (and freezes UI (is it a bug?)).

My request would be, that Amarok when plugging in new device would ask for path in media, where to look for music.

Thank you

Another possible solution could be Support for multiple local collections https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=197573

It would be a great solution in my personal case, but not in cases, when external media is used only one (e.g. borrowed from fiend). It would be extremely nice to have both features ;)

I keep my collection on an external 1TB volume which I don't have connected all the time. this volume also serves as my archive. it would be nice to configure a specific path to your music on a volume by volume basis (right click on volume-> configure path to music within volume). This narrows down the search (there might be files we dont want to include in our music collection), and potentially speeds up the scan...

It would also be helpful to add a progress indicator on the volume for scanning operations just like the one for the local collection - only put it on the volume's icon so we can monitor the progress of multiple scan operations. <- this seriously come in handy when you have a fairly large collection that takes a long time to scan
