I believe bug is in the satlib/SatLib.c:SatInit(...). Global variable qth has field callsign which is array of 17 chars. City name is copied there in SatInit. If it's longer than 16 chars and certain protection features are used which is case on Fedora. In that case application crashes. First is to increase callsign size to some reasonably big value. Say 256. Another is to remove callsign field since it's not used anywere.
SVN commit 1038950 by khudyakov: Do not copy ObsName to qth.callsign. Latter has fixed length and if ObsName string is longer than 16 bytes copying may cause crash. Initialize qth.callsing to empty string instead. It's not used anywhere so this is most conservative fix. A reporter experiencing this issue sent me an email with steps on how to reproduce the issue, I'm translating it: --- The error is in the length of the base place/location. It cannot exceed 15 characters, however, after the installation, the application allows you to put a location with more than 15 chars. In my case, I live at "Santa Cruz de La Palma". When I installed the app I could choose that name for my location. After I finished the install, I got the error. To workaround the issue you have to edit the config file (~/.kde/share/config/kstarsrc) and manually reduce the ammount of characters of your location --- So, the commit from comment 6 should have fixed this issue, should the report be closed ? Most likely. However I must note that I've never reproduced the bug. It's required to build kstars with specific options, fortified and like that. I think it should be tested with with Kstars4.4 built by fedora to be sure that bug is fixed
