Seems ok here.

Dolphin Version 1.3.80
Using KDE 4.3.61 (KDE 4.3.61 (KDE 4.4 >= 20090717)) - trunk r1001939

Could you please update your kde packages and check his behavior again? Thanks

...but now Dolphin doesn't show local HD drives.

Lancelot shows local HD drives without problems.

it was a conscious choice not to show local hard drives in the Places model. the reason is that they appear as one "big" system to the user via the VFS. so showing a Home link and a /dev/sda1 (or whatever) that point to the same thing wasn't very useful and indeed was even rather redundant. pointing to a / partition was even less helpful. these disks tend to be just an implementation or system set up detail.

hotplug drives are slightly special: while they do appear in the VFS, they come and go and the user usually _does_ care about them as inidividual devices. so they are still there.

if you wish to see your partitions, you can create links to their mountpoints using drag and drop into the places sidebar of dolphin or the file dialog.

I think that this is a very very bad design decision. This is a big usability bug, because the user can't see any local partition nowhere, he must add they manually (at Dolphin or KickOff) after install the O.S. to see they (assuming that he know how to do it).

Show something is better than don't show anything.
Comment 8 Aaron J. Seigo 2009-07-29 20:14:26 UTC
the point is that most people don't want to see those partitions. they are not useful to them, they are redundant information and a "system level detail". exposing those to everyone served fewer people than not showing them to everyone does.

It makes sense, but partially.

- It makes sense with "/" and "/home" mount points (already exists "root" and "home" folders mount points at Kickoff and Dolphin).
- It doesn't make sense with any another local hard disk drives. If the user has other local hard disk drives, he can't easily see this disk drives because they aren't show in any place.

Example: If the user has another hard disk/partition for data (in NTFS or ext3, it's indifferent), he can't see any option to access to it.

Please, fix this high usability bug.
Marking "Later" (sorry if it is not right).

"If the user has other local hard disk drives, he can't easily see this disk drives because they aren't show in any place."

this is the entire purpose of mount points, and it isn't something we can with a high degree of correctness "guess at". it requires configuration.

so, this isn't "later" this is "there is no intention to change this behaviour"
Comment 11 usrrgt 2009-07-30 12:10:58 UTC
In that case, Kickoff and Dolphin should show all mount points.
If not, most users will not know to access your other hard disks / partitions. Is obvious.

If the users can not do at KDE something as simple as this, they will use GNOME, Xfce, Mac OS, Windows or anything else allows them to do it; that is, another than KDE.

In any case, the software must be for all users, not for the majority.
It can be adapted to the most users, but only when not be impossible its use to any user.
