Version: (using KDE 4.2.2) OS: Linux Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages I wanted to use an image file called "Gänseblümchen.jpg" as my background image for the login screen. What I got was just a monochrome background. When I renamed the file to "Gaensebluemchen.jpg", I got my image displayed. So it seems kdm has got a problem with umlauts in file names...?
the most likely explanation for that is the lack of proper locale settings in kdm's environment. you probably need something like "export LC_ALL=de_DE.UTF-8" in your /etc/init.d/kdm, but the exact place is up to the distribution's packaging policy. please reopen if you find contradicting evidence.
Thanks for your help, downstream (Debian) agreed. (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=528937)
