I have similar problems in Dolphin as well as in Kopete. I want to add the forward button to the main toolbar of Dolphin, but it doesn't appear. I tried to remove a button, but even that didn't do anything at all.

So I guess this problem could be not directly related to kopete, but more basic code. There doesn't appear any relevant looking messages in .xsession-errors.

I am using KDE 4.3.1 on Gentoo.
Comment 2 Sven Wehner 2009-09-03 21:48:46 UTC
Ohh, I just checked the configuration file:
> $ ll .kde/share/apps/dolphin/dolphinui.rc
> -rw-r--r-- 1 XXX XXX 3688 2009-09-03 21:09 .kde/share/apps/dolphin/dolphinui.rc

So the files got changed recently, and it contains the desired configuration:
> <ToolBar noMerge="1" name="mainToolBar" >
>  <text context="@title:menu" >Main Toolbar</text>
>  <Action name="go_back" />
>  <Action name="go_forward" />
>  <Action name="go_up" />
>  ...
> </ToolBar>

Thus I guess reading out doesn't work correctly.

I did some tests with gwenview (same problem with shortcuts, but works better with strace), but it wrote the changes and seemed to read from the file (according to strace). But no working shortcuts anyway... and no error-like message.

Same problem here:
dolphin's config file is changing but toolbars aren't
Comment 4 Michał Walenciak 2009-10-19 19:35:25 UTC
today i've discovered that in my ~/.kde4/share/apps/dolphin/dolphinui.rc i had:
<kpartgui version="6" name="dolphin" >

and i've created a temp account, where toolbars were working and there was:
<kpartgui version="10" name="dolphin" >

so the solution is obvious
