*** Description ***
Modifying the directory into which to place downloads from `System Settings -> About Me -> Paths -> Downloads path:' causes KDE to begin moving files in my $HOME directory to that location.

*** The story ***
After changing my Downloads path from $HOME to $HOME/Downloads, I was given multiple notifications that files were being moved from my $HOME directory to my downloads file (such as my Pictures and several .hidden files). System Settings froze during this time, and killing it with Ctrl+X stopped the process of moving files and reset my Downloads path to $HOME; I then moved the files BACK to my to their original location.

Didn't you got a confirmation message box ?
Thanks
Comment 2 Dylon 2009-05-18 18:26:39 UTC
I just ran it again, and YES, I do get a confirmation box -- I guess this is not a bug then, but why exactly would one want to move the files in his $HOME directory to his Downloads one?
Comment 3 Dario Andres 2009-05-27 21:03:37 UTC
It seems the "Download" path entry was added recently.
So when you checked it, it was using your $HOME, and as you moved it to $HOME/Downloads, it tried to move the contents (as it will do for every entry if you change it (it seems))
Comment 4 Jan Gerrit Marker 2009-07-26 14:21:25 UTC
The moving idea is ok, but a warning about moving the hidden files (where most of the configurations are stored) would be very good. I know to persons who made a mistake and had to restore their complete configuration by moving the files back.

Thanks Dario for changing the severity:

I changed the Music path and accepted the move. Since my music is on an external hard disk, I was startled when I started to move the complete /home/user folder to that disk. I know how to kill such a move, but the average user will have a hard time to do so and might run into a big problem with his data.

SVN commit 1055427 by dfaure:

Don't move the home directory just because some path used to point to it. Don't even offer it ;)

Ooops, my "Fixed for" was wrong. This didn't make it to 4.3.4.

The tag for 4.3.4 was made at r1055148, while this fix is r1055428.
It missed the 4.3.4 release by about 12 hours.

=> Fixed for 4.4.0-beta1.
