Description Casper Clemence 2009-03-15 11:40:30 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

It would be great if it were possible to save/load desktop-wide projects and transport them between computers.

What I have in mind is that applications are in control of deciding what data may saved. When the user asks to save the desktop project the desktop-project agent publishes a notification, applications then reply by publishing a list of data which is available to be saved, the user then confirms which data to save, the relevant files/settings/application-states are saved and tar-ed up.

I imagine the user being presented with some kind of a structured list (probably a checkbox-tree like the ones for selecting folders to include in a library), with reasonable defaults chosen (perhaps simply all selected by default, perhaps the application decides).

On opening a project, if certain applications are not available the user should be notified and alternative applications offered for opening the given file where possible.

This is a very sparse description but I think that it would be a very useful feature for many perhaps most users. There are lots of possibilities, this could for instance play rather well with some of nepomuk's intended uses, but the core, simple behaviour could be relatively simple to implement (maybe).

Hi Casper,

please don't get me wrong on this. I do really like the idea and I think it would be really useful to have such a functionality in KDE. Maybe integrated into existing applications or maybe as a whole new application.

While I agree that your report is a wish, it is unfortunately out of scope for handling it on Bugzilla. It's just not the best place to discuss new application ideas or find developers who'd be interested in creating such an application.

There's several places you could find people to help coding this or where you could get some general feedback for your idea, including:
- kde-devel@kde.org mailinglist (more developer-centric)
- http://forum.kde.org (more user-centric)

I hope I made the point clear enough. I'm closing this bug not because the idea is bad, but because it's just not the right place.
