Version: (using KDE 4.2.0) OS: Linux Installed from: Unspecified Linux In KDE 4.2, Multimedia is disabled if Phonon is not installed together with KDE. If you then go into system > system settings > multimedia, nothing appears in the multimeda section after clicking on the icon. A fix was to reinstall Phonon and then multimedia worked.
KDE depends on Phonon. I don't understand where the bug is... KDE without Phonon (which should be impossible) is KDE without multimedia. Nothing appearing in the multimedia section should be the expected behavior, don't you think?

When I first installed KDE 4.2, I already had Phonon installed prior to that and the multimedia section of system settings would't list anything when clicking on the icon, and the system notification sounds weren't working at all. Multimedia wasn't working when it came to system events, however, if I played youtube or music, it worked. So, what I did was reinstall Phono on top of the phono installation I already had, and then my multimedia was fully operational afterwards.
installed from source I assume? what exactly did you upgrade? and from what old version to what new version?

No, both KDE 4.2 and Phonon 4.3.0 were installed as binaries, and not source, using Arch Linux's pacman package manager: # pacman -S kdebase kdebase-workspace (for the KDE 4.2 base install) # pacman -S phonon (for the Phonon 4.3 install) > what exactly did you upgrade? After I installed KDE 4.2 and saw that 'multimedia' was not functioning, I simply reinstalled the same phonon version (4.3) again without uninstalling the previous one. No upgrade was made. After I resinstalled phonon, multimedia worked perfectly. Some of my friends had a similar multimedia problem with 4.2, however, they had a different solution. They deleted the "phonondevicesrc" configuration file and they claim that fixed the problem. I tried that but it didn't work. > and from what old version to what new version? See above. There was no 'old' and 'new' version...the same version of phonon was reinstalled.
Alright, I'm beginning to understand your issue. But I have no idea how to reproduce it and why replacing some files with their exact copy would change anything (other than timestamps). Do you have any hints that suggest that this is an issue that needs to be fixed in Phonon and or KDE?

No hints except for what I hear from my colleagues that use KDE. They say that it's most likely a phonon / alsa / kde conflict. I cannot confirm this in anyway.
After several Archlinux packages upgrades ;) , are you still experiecing this issue? Have you checked the arch forums ? Thanks
