Description Stephan Sokolow 2009-02-02 16:35:22 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Compiled From Sources

As of KDE 4.2.0, there is no intuitive, discoverable way to access the Desktop Theme Details control panel and, even if you know it's there, it's a hassle to get to it compared to just choosing a pre-existing theme.

I'm attaching an animated GIF presentation/slideshow detailing the changes I am proposing as well as a GIMP XCF mockup so you can easily flip back and forth between before/after and collapsed/expanded by toggling layers.

The mockup turned out to be a little too big to attach, so here's a link:

Also, please make sure you've watched the presentation through to the end. I didn't have time to include any sort of slide counter or progress indicator, so just watch until you come to the slide with no narration text.

Does the KDE 4.2 desktop theme dialog actually work? If I try to change the theme (choosing from the drop down list at the top left) it doesn't enable the Apply button at the bottom.

If I try to change one of the individual elements, the apply button is enabled, but it pops up a message box saying "To change your desktop theme to "(Customized)" open Desktop Settings and select "(Customized)" from the droplist. It then doesn't actually change anything.

I'd test it to confirm, but KDE 4.2 unsets my custom panel widths when I change themes, so I've stuck with Elegance since I noticed the problem.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
