Description Fred Wells 2009-02-01 04:17:04 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: RedHat RPMs

As of KDE4.2, there still exists no mechanism to manually save the user's session. System Settings -> Session Manager provides an option to "Restore manually saved session" on login, yet there exists no clear option to actually save the session to be restored.

Bug 155341 was originally reported on this and has been closed as fixed. However, while something may have been fixed, the original reported bug was not.

If I'm incorrect and this has been fixed, could someone kindly instruct me how to manually save a session. And please, not some obscure command-line, dbus-send method.

Looking at the source, it appears that that menu item only becomes available when you have the session manager set to 'restore manually saved session' on login. When I just tried setting it, it took a little while for the change to be registered by Kickoff, but the option did appear. Does it not for you?

Well, either I totally overlooked the Kickoff menu item or it wasn't there until after I toggled the system setting off and back on. But, it is there now and, as such, this bug can be closed. My only comment is that IMO it's not very intuitive residing under the "Leave" tab. Might make more sense within the System Settings -> Session Manager dialog. But then, that's likely the start of a large subjective debate. Feedback is much appreciated. Closing the bug.

Thanks!!

It would be very helpful to duplicate the "save session" button in the session manager.

I just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out where the save session button was, only to learn that I must click "Leave" before gaining this option. So, I have to "Leave" before I "Save session," which doesn't make sense from a user's standpoint. i.e. The user might just want to save the session and keep working.

I'm not the only one that has had this expectation as I've seen evidence of this trouble all over the web.
