Description Friedrich W. H. Kossebau 2009-01-31 19:54:34 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.5.10)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs

If the mail composer is requested with a given email address for the recipient it would be useful if my default identity could be chosen based on a matching domain name in the email address.

Ex.: I have two identities, "firstlife" (hans@realworld.org) and "secondlife "(joe@kde.org).
If the mail composer is now requested because somewhere I clicked on buddy@kde.org, the identity should be set to "secondlife".
If I clicked on gretel@dreamworld.org or ernst@realworld.org the "firstlife" identiy should be chosen.

There is already a way to do what you propose.
If you filter the incoming messages and send them to different folders, depending on the sender, you can configure every kmail folder to use a default identity when replying to mails in that folder.

Indeed (I make heavy use of that) :) But it just works for those contacts you know you are going to work with. Sure, I could create new folders per identity which catch all otherwise unfiltered messages whose domain matches the identity. But I would like to keep them all in one folder (inbox for me) to have them all in one view (there are not so many, usually just random requests from one or the other domain related groups).
Another usecase: I want to reply to a post to a mailinglist privately, using the most nearest identity to the author I have (because I turn to private). E.g. fellow@company.com writes to a KDE list and I answer him offlist I would like to use myself@company.com, to not make up an unneeded distance. If KMail assisted me here, I would be pleased.

Oh, and I forgot about the initial usecase:
Click on a mailto: link in some webpage (that's what it to abstractly described with "mail composer is requested"). If I click on mailto:buddy@kde.org I want my "secondlife" identity preset. There is no folder involved, so Jaime's proposed solution doesn't work there. Hope that shows the usefulness now better. :)

Fix: "[...] (that is what I too abstractly described with [...]"

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.
