Description Fabio Varesano 2009-01-31 15:13:26 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Unspecified Linux

After I successfully upgraded to KDE 4.2, I removed the whole .kde directory to start with a clean configuration.

Everything went fine except the fact that I was unable to hear any sound from KDE and KDE apps (eg: Amarok) ..

I played with this some hours and then I understood that all the Audio Output had been assigned by default to the Internal PC-Speaker rather than the Sound Card, under System Settings > Multimedia.

Rearranging the Output Device Preference fixed the problem.

I report this as a bug as I think that KDE should understand what Device it should use by default correctly.

I can imagine how this problem could impact a KDE beginner or a tester.

alsamixer shows my audio card to be HDA Intel Realtek ALC861.

Hope this helps,

Fabio Varesano

Thanks for the report, but I need more information to understand what happened:

1) What exactly is this "Internal PC-Speaker"? Did it show up like this in the device list in System Settings? How was it called there? What does the tooltip for this device show?

2a) Do you have more than one sound card installed?

2b) please paste the output of "cat /proc/asound/cards /proc/asound/pcm"

No. This is a laptop.

Even after reading this I am not sure how to fix the problem but I am having a very similar problem. When ever I start up Amarok I get the following message:

Phonon: KDE's Multimedia Library
The audio playback device HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog) does not work. Falling back to default.

I just repetitively opened the program to get the message typed up as it appeared.

The only message I ever get I posted in my previous comment I post it again here:
The audio playback device HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog) does not work. Falling
back to default.

2a) Do you have more than one sound card installed?
No I do not. And I am on a desktop computer.

2b) please paste the output of "cat /proc/asound/cards /proc/asound/pcm"
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xdffdc000 irq 16

00-01: STAC92xx Digital : STAC92xx Digital : playback 1

I like the reporter to this problem have no problems hearing sound from other sources. I am actually listening to music, as I post this, through the Rhythmbox Music player.
