Description arrenlex 2009-01-28 01:03:42 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.2.0)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

When issuing either of
xrandr -o left
or
xrandr --output LVDS --rotate left

KDE will momentarily repaint in a rotated state (but with panel in the middle, as in bug 162856), then momentarily repaint with corruption (the bottom 3/4 of the screen consists of purple lines), and then totally crash dropping me back to gdm.

I am happy to provide any info you need to debug this.

This is a Toshiba tablet laptop, with intel integrated graphics. Ubuntu intrepid and KDE 4.2.0 from the http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-experimental/ubuntu repositories.

After further testing, this appears to be a kwin bug.

When I run gnome, and replace metacity with kwin, the desktop crashes and boots me to gdm.

When I run kde, and replace kwin with metacity, the desktop rotates perfectly in all aspects.

If someone could reassign the product, I would be grateful.

Just noting that rotating with compiz works fine, so the problem is not just that kwin is a compositing window manager.

I would like to confirm this bug in 4.3. It has actually been a problem since 3.5, if I remember correctly, but just decided to come checking here. Basically rotating causes about a third of the right side of the screen to show up on the left third of the screen (in rotated direction) with the rest being covered in noise. An X crash follows quickly thereafter.

This is on a Thinkpad X60 tablet with onboard Intel graphics card. The resolution is trying to go from 1400x1050 to 1050x1400.

Hello, Antonio;

I have discovered that disabling desktop effects (in system settings) allows me to rotate perfectly. Is this the case for you as well?
Comment 5 Antonio Salazar 2009-02-28 02:15:44 UTC
Ah, yes. Turning off effects still has the screen flash once with plasma not having adjusted, but it finalizes the rotation.
Comment 6 Christoph Feck 2009-04-16 05:14:26 UTC
Reassigning as per suggestion in comment #1
Comment 7 Martin Flöser 2009-09-06 15:24:21 UTC
What exactly is crashing? X Server, plasma or kwin? In case of the first any useful information from /var/log/Xorg.0.log is appreciated. In case of plasma or kwin a crash report would help.
Comment 8 Martin Flöser 2010-03-31 19:36:31 UTC
Is this still an issue? I just tried and it works fine.
Comment 9 Antonio Salazar 2010-03-31 19:48:46 UTC
Sorry for not getting back to you back in September.

I actually no longer have a computer running latest KDE in my possession, so I can't check to make sure this no longer causes issues. Hope someone else with this problem will step up and indicate whether or not its still a problem.
Comment 10 arrenlex 2010-04-04 06:32:10 UTC
I haven't experienced this issue for a very long time. Looks like it's been fixed! :)
