Version: (using Devel) OS: Linux Installed from: Compiled sources Currently I use Mandriva 2009.1 Cooker upgraded from Mandriva 2009 Powerpack. KDE is in latest version from Mandriva Cooker repository. The situations looks as follow: when I set folder view for desktop (not plasma) and something crashes - I have to press ctrl+alt+del and then reboot laptop or just switch it off (super hard reboot) and on, after the reboot desktop appears in plasma view (even if in Appearance setting is still folder view - when this setting is changed by me (first I choose plasma view and then folder view) fiolder view backs, but icons are in completely different order than they were before rebooting.\
This is due plasma wasn't closed OK (it was killed) and the settings couldn't be saved properly.
(In reply to comment #1) > This is due plasma wasn't closed OK (it was killed) and the settings couldn't > be saved properly. When I start computer (not after a crash), everything works correctly what has to mean that settings are saved and they are OK. Right? When computer is restarted (KDE menu -> Leave... -> Restart Computer) and KDE starts again, plasma is in proper state (Folder View). So, what happens with settings when there is a crash and they haven't been changed by user before? In my oppinion KDE should only read them on start and leave alone... Are they [settings] changed or deleted from hard disk when computer starts and works? Finally, is there any way to prevent from such situation? Which files should be backuped in case of crash happening? User's profile [~/user_name/kde4]?
a) always include the version number in your reports. `kde4-config --version` is perfect b) if you cut power and plasma does not get a chance to cleanly shutdown, all bets are off. this is a "well, don't do that!" sort of thing. c) we store settings as much as is reasonable to do so. plasma is rather aggressive with saving settings due to people expecting the unrealistic, namely that plasma should magically restore itself just exactly as it was no matter what happens. 99% of the time the unrealistic expectations are met. =)
(In reply to comment #3) > a) always include the version number in your reports. `kde4-config --version` > is perfect well, sorry about that - I was sure, that if I wrote "KDE is in latest version from Mandriva Cooker repository" it will clear for you which version I have... btw. it's 4.1.96 (KDE 4.2 RC1)... but it doesn't matter now... > > b) if you cut power and plasma does not get a chance to cleanly shutdown, all > bets are off. this is a "well, don't do that!" sort of thing. I know that cutting power is not very welkome action and it may destroy either system or computer - belive me, I don't do this for sport... but when a crash happens is ther any other way? anyway, your answer doesn't clear the question... > > c) we store settings as much as is reasonable to do so. plasma is rather > aggressive with saving settings due to people expecting the unrealistic, namely > that plasma should magically restore itself just exactly as it was no matter > what happens. 99% of the time the unrealistic expectations are met. =) hey man, I don't expect anything... I've just sent an info about a bug which has happened and then when I was told that "it happened becouse plasma hasn't been closed properly (see comment #2)" I just wanted to know what plasma does when system crashes and how to save KDE settings... > Finally, it was my last bug-report sent here... I know, you probably don't care this, but I expected something else from KDE Team... Greets. ludvick
I think I have the same issue (my system doesn't crash) since 2-3 weeks after an update. Each time I logout or restart, locations and sizes of plasmoids are lost. Nevertheless plasmoids are still there. I read a comment from another user experiencing the same trouble. It would be good to investigate this deeper. I doubt this can be considered as normal behaviour.
