Description Tomasz Dudzik 2008-12-31 15:34:02 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Compiler: CMake 2.6
OS: Linux
Installed from: Compiled sources

KDE4 has now a nice device notifier applet, but it shows only devices such usb storage, optical drivers, etc. KDE should have a possibility to inform user about all kind of devices that has been connected to the computer. I.e when i plugg in my printer and turn it on, KDE should inform me that the printer was found, and should ask me if i want to install drivers (if needed) or configure the printer to work. Also other devices like mobile phones, digital cameras, webcams, etc. should be handle by this. KDE needs this feature. Now when i plugg in my digi cam nothings happens and i don't know if KDE 'sees' it.

I really hope KDE will have such feature.

This appears to be present in some stage. but not very well developed in 4.2
Comment 2 Tomasz Dudzik 2009-03-04 18:19:39 UTC
We can wait for 4.3, just make it happen for all non storage devices :D

one more idea: for example, if digital camera is plugged in, the krunner can appears with a list of application which can handle camera (digikam and dolphin, for the case), so user is alerted that camera is recognized and needed applciation can be quickly choosen. What do you think?

and one more thing: lets take a completly new Linux/KDE user. He wants to do a very simple thing: burn CD/DVD. He inserts blanck disk and... nothing happens. What he should do next? There is here program for CD/DVD burning? And than he says: "KDE sucks! It event cant burn CD/DVD!".
But if after inserting blank disk krunner will popup with a list of installed CD/DVD burning programs (or may be even with shortcuts to console commands for disk erasing/formatting) - such user will be happy :)

The option will show up if k3b is installed;
if k3b is not installed, or the currently installed cd/dvd burner doesn't provide the correct .desktop file, how are we supposed to know that it is even possible to burn a cd?
Comment 8 Tomasz Dudzik 2009-11-01 12:13:27 UTC
This is not about the K3B thing, it's about all none-storage devices like web cams, speakers, digicams, etc.

I don't think a feature like that belongs to the device notifier. the device notifier is thought to let the user mount, umount, open his storage drives. a printer is a completely other thing.
I think instead it should be a normal notification (like e.g. when you transfer a file) to inform the user about that.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
