Description Wolfram R. Sieber 2008-12-25 17:29:24 UTC
Version:           3.5.9 (using 3.5.10, Debian Package 4:3.5.10.dfsg.1-0lenny1 (lenny/sid))
Compiler:          Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.26-1-686

kWeather always displays sunrise/sunset time _for the current day_. It'd be nice if kOrganizer would help to plan a bit in advance.

So, I wanted to schedule an appointment for July 24th, for some kind party. But I have no idea when sunset will be on that day.

If kOrganizer wouldn't display workday hours only, but sunrise/sunset times too, that'd also help to estimate drawbacks of working long hours, say in three weeks, or when I'd switch shifts with a colleague. Then it might be nice to know when's sunrise time.

KWeather obtains the sunrise/sunset times as part of the weather report from the weather service provider, it doesn't calculate it. We're planning on adding some astronomical functions to kdelibs in KDE4.3 to allow us to support astronomical calendars and holidays, so this would be another use for those. However, we would also then need to know what location to calculate the sunrise/sunset for, but I have some ideas about that too.

Why not add them to Marble (and have Marble go into kdesupport soonish)?

As mentioned earlier I'd like Marble not just to be a widget to display stuff but also to be a service that provides geo information.

Additionally it would be cool of course if one would be able to point at any point in Marble and be able to retrieve Sun and Moon rise/set. But that's a different matter.

@John,

yes, just the moment I commited the feature request, I realized that this feature would need to take the user location into account. But -- isn't that bit of data yet available by the user's preferences?

About the sunrise/sunset times, I just snooped a little around:
* http://www.uwasa.fi/~jpe/sun.shtml gives a glance of sunrise/sunset times for _today_, but...
* http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~jpe/sunyr.zip provides us with a list for every week for every place mentioned on the above page.
* http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.php is apparently a web-based implementation of a sunrise/set times approximation, and...
* http://www.as.ysu.edu/~wbuckler/Weather/Readings/sunrise_sunset_times.htm provides some background info.

Hope to help

That and tide times too !

Thinking about how to display this kind of information, as the agenda view background color is already used to display work hour, and using a "normal" tide calendar would just shows events spanning through the entire day (thus messing with the mini calendar), perhaps Korganizer could add a new type of incidence display ?

We currently have :
- events which spans on 15 minutes at least, hours or days
- tasks which takes exactly 30 minutes too
..this is acceptable has it's unusual to have shorter events (although questionable for the tasks, but that's another subject)

What if we could add a new way to display events/tasks ? In our case, perhaps you could display just a line (colored with the category color, and optional small text aligned left) ?
I've attached a mock-up for this idea.
