It is nearly impossible to add an applet to a panel with autohide. The panel disappears when the "Add widget"-dialog appears and does not reappear while dragging to the edge of the screen. 

I see two solutions:

1. The panel appears while dragging a widget to the edge of the screen.

2. All autohide panels are shown when the "Add widget"-dialog is opened.

Personally I prefer the second solution.
