Version: 4.1.85 (using Devel) OS: Linux Installed from: Compiled sources I have an Acer Aspire laptop, i plug an external monitor to VGA output, i go to systemsettings->Screen and I configure the resolution of the secondary external monitor. I apply and sudenly KDE restart to kdm, each time I am trying to do the same, the same happens. Finally, I disconnect the VGA external monitor, I go to systemsettings->Screen, and kded4 crashes. I will try to obtain and paste a good backtrace of that crash. Thanks you for your work.
I haven't could to reproduce the crash of kded4, but doing more tests, i obtained a complete system freeze (including Linux kernel). I plug the VGA, I go to systemsettings->Screen, I set resolution, KDE unexpectly restarts to kdm. I log in again, I disconnect VGA, I go to systemsettings->Screen, and the the system (kernel included) frozen.
I believe that what I've faced is the same bug. As soon as I change and apply settings of an external D-SUB-attached monitor in KDE's "System settings"-"Display and monitor"-"Size and orientation", all panels disappear and both's screens background go black. The system settings windows itself remains ok and can raise new windows ("Help" for example). The only way to continue is to press a computer's power button to bring up KDE's "Leave" dialogue and restart or logout. Below are my system details: Toshiba L10 notebook, Pentium M 1.6 GHz, 1.2 GB PC2700. Intel 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics, Linux 2.6.34-ARCH i686. X.Org X Server 1.8.1.902 (1.8.2 RC 2). Intel video driver 2.11.0-2. KDE 4.4.85 (4.5 Beta 2).
X crashes or complete freezes are not KDE problem, report to X.Org.
