Description william jones 2008-12-01 04:25:48 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.3)
OS: Other

Soundblaster Live! Value [CT4871] sound sputters (system sound after login, while playing cds, etc.) KScd works ok, but the volume is too low @ 100%(maybe another bug) Program mainly used to play cds: kaffeine -- also stutters. Thought it could be a problem with Pulseaudio, but I deferred it in system settings and promoted Default...but with no change whatsoever. CD audio also stutters using vlc.

KScd is the only program that doesn't stutter while playing cds, but the volume is way too low even at 100% (system volume almost max-ed too)

Can you try it with a non-KDE player? xmms or similar?

I ripped the cd to a .flac file, but xmms was unresponsive. I used

Rhythmbox with Gnome also worked ok...system sounds don't sputter when using Gnome for some reason either.

This might really be a problem with pulseaudio. If the pulseaudio deamon is running there's no point in changing the audio device priorities as ALSA hardware/dmix access is blocked by pulse.

Since Kaffeine also stutters this seems to be a xine <-> pulse problem. I've been trying xine and pulse and haven't heard anything you describe, so perhaps it needs a different version than I was testing or it's a distri issue.

Whatever's the case I can't do anything about it at this point. You might try asking at the Fedora, PulseAudio or Xine projects about this...
