Description m.wege 2008-11-27 22:08:59 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.3)
Installed from: Unspecified Linux

The VZs are Germany-based social-networks/facebook clones. They have more the 8 million members and have a chat function which is provided by Nimbuzz.com. Nimbuzz also provides a client software for this, but unfortunately only for Windows. I would also like StudiVZ-Chat-Contacts to integrate in KDE. So it would be nice if there would be support for it. I do not know how its possible, but it should be since there already a client. I will write an email to nimbuzz-support and put the reply here.

The StudiVZ-chat uses a (unfortunately) modified Jabber-implementation. It is documented here:
http://freakazoid.teamblind.de/2009/02/06/wie-das-studivz-zum-pidgin-kam/
http://freakazoid.teamblind.de/2009/02/27/studivz-und-pidgin-teil-2/

Unfortunately in German, but I assume the author konradgraefe@aol.com
speaks/ reads english to give help.

I guess this bug should read "Please support nimbuzz" since this is what it is all about. It appears that Pidgin is able to connect to nimbuzz using XMPP just fine, but kopete isn't. I also tried with other messenger clients (BeejiveIM) and it also works using nimbuzz.com port 5222 and the Jabber Protocol. So kopete must be doing something different here, and I guess it shouldn't be that hard to implement?
Comment 3 m.wege 2009-07-29 13:27:24 UTC
That is true. It work pidgin, but not with kopete. I have the theory that it might be an problem with accepting an new ssl key, but I am not sure about this. Pidgin asked me the first time I connected, Kopete did not. Here is my post in the KDE-Forum with wireshark recordings of Pidgin and Kopete:
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=61595#p79446

Still this is not a pure nimbuzz-bug then, because as I understand it the Jabber implementation needs to be modified to understand the usernames. So therefor it might be wise to assign this bug to a person who is responsible for the jabber implementation.

And, if someone of the devs pics it up and gives me instructions what to do, I am will to help to find out what the problem is.

I can see that this problem might not attract many devs, since it appears as a problem of German users of the VZ-networks. But since there are actually two things "A general bug in the jabber implementation, which might be also a problem somewhere else and a wish for naming support of Studivz/ Nimbuzz" would it make sense to split this bug up into two and file another for the problems with jabber. Having the bug part of the problem fixed would help a lot.

with kde 4.4 part 1 of this bug i solved. now the generall access to the nimbuzz / studivz jabber transport works. the main problem remains that usernames are not displayed.
this is the patch in pidgin used for fixing the problem with usernames. it is only a few lines.
http://freakazoid.teamblind.de/downloads/pidgin-xmpp-nick-patch.zip
i can also provide output of the kopete xmpp-konsole, if it is needed.

It will be great if they can develop this feature. StudiVZ is a very popular net in Germany.

This bug can be closed. Studivz has announced they will support Jabber directly in a few weeks.
