Description Chris Bolus 2008-11-13 23:13:10 UTC
Version: (using KDE 3.5.9)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Mandriva RPMs

Kaffeine crashes immediately after opening (onscreen just long enough to see icons) with SIGSEGV error.
Amarok crashes as soon as music begins to play (which happens automatically within a few seconds) - no error message.
Kwrite, Knotes and Open Office Write all crash with SIGSEGV error if a Save is attempted - in the case of Open Office it is the File Picker that reports the error. With this one KDE has tended to lock up completely and the power button is the only way out. I haven't yet used all the available applications but those are the only ones so far that have problems.

I have gone through a number of possibilities with Adam Williamson in the Mandriva forums (thread: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=97252) and it was he that prompted me to file this report.

The installation (Mandriva 2008.1) is virtually a new one and I have applied every update available. The only relatively unusual feature is Virtualbox with a Windows VM, but the crashes occur even when this is not loaded.

I also note, when using verbose mode on shutdown, that the ALSA driver fails to shut down because a process is using it; some detective work has identified Pulse Audio as this process, but killing it makes no difference.

Maybe there is something wrong on your setup. Anyway, please install debug packages and try to post some backtraces.

Thanks!
Comment 2 Chris Bolus 2008-11-14 21:16:03 UTC
Installed gdb; here's a backtrace on the Kaffeine crash:

From OpenOffice Writer: This locked up. The crash message was from kdefilepicker, but it wouldn't backtrace. Had to alt-tab out of it - at this point I discover that although the mouse pointer is moving, KDE won't respond to clicks. Keyboard is still active and I can TAB around the screen and type.

Hope these help; I don't know enough to interpret these.

Comment 3 Chris Bolus 2008-11-14 21:19:57 UTC
Actually I found I could backtrace the OpenOffice Writer crash using TAB & Alt-TAB. The OpenOffice file menu is frozen on the screen. The backtrace is here:

Also managed to Kill soffice.bin with Ksysguard, after which the mouse worked again, so OpenOffice captured the mouse but did not release on crash.

These look like they're all caused by the same thing. Have you done anything odd to your Qt version or installation?
Comment 6 FiNeX 2008-11-14 22:48:18 UTC
Could you try to install debug packages in order to provide useful backtraces?

you can find the instructions on this page:

Comment 7 A. Spehr 2008-11-14 22:49:38 UTC
Try upgrading to 3.5.10, it could be your libraries are out of sync or something.
Comment 8 A. Spehr 2008-11-14 23:44:16 UTC
This is probably a Mandriva packaging error. In which case, you should actually report it to their bugtracker. The backtraces are all showing that you crash at the same spot. They're crashing on a widget used to display icons, so I suspect the windows bit isn't it. Its definitely lower level, which is why all your applications are crashing. Are you using a particular icon theme? Then it could be our problem...

The backtraces here are good, so you can just copy those into your report there. Remove the (no debugging symbols found) part, it isn't needed.
Comment 9 A. Spehr 2008-11-14 23:59:49 UTC
Oh, and the OpenOffice is entirely different and should be reported to them directly. The rest, well, what theme are you using? :)

Odd, I've been through all this with one of the Mandriva guys (Adam Williamson) and he said I should report it as a KDE bug.

Just standard, as-downloaded 2008.1. Again I've tried changing theme, as suggested by Adam, and it made no difference.

Still learning on all this stuff... (recent convert) - just spent a week finding out where the debug repos are and it seems I don't need them anyway!

3.5.10 isn't available for Mandriva 2008, and my machine struggles with 2009.

Comment 11 A. Spehr 2008-12-01 11:44:38 UTC
So what theme are you using?
Comment 12 Chris Bolus 2008-12-01 18:40:15 UTC
Theme is Mandriva, which is the standard theme "out of the box". I tried changing ing to Keramik but it made no difference.

Incidentally I seem to have solved the OpenOffice problem by installing OOO 3.0. A workaround rather than a solution I suppose but at least I can save documents now.
Comment 13 FiNeX 2008-12-07 18:56:57 UTC
I'm even more convinced that this is a downstram issue.
