Description Jean-Christophe Dubois 2008-11-06 23:34:10 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.2)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

My system was working OK with KDE 3.5 (Kubuntu 8.04). It is not a very powerfull system but I think it should be good enough compared to the various netbook out there.

Ever since I upgraded the system to KDE 4.1.3 (kubuntu 8.10) the system is unusable under KDE. Any time I type something or I move the mouse the sytem goes black. It will then go back to the "normal" display until I type somthing again in which case it goes black again. There is no crash the system is running kind of OK but is is unusable as the display disappear (goes black) any time I try to interact with the system.

Note that I a getting the same bahavior with the kubuntu live CD so it should not be something with my KDE desktop configuration.

One additional data point is that the system CPU is not overloaded (top show the system load around 1 to 5%)

Also KDE applications (kontact, konqueror, ...) are running mostly fine (without spurious black screen) under another environement like XFCE for example.

I am typing this report under KDE at the moment and it is very painfull ...

If you need any more data on my system, please ask ...

Hello,

the KDE bug tracking system is not a place for general user support.
Please use our user support (for example the forum, http://forum.kde.org) for general setup with the system.
Comment 2 Jean-Christophe Dubois 2008-11-06 23:57:34 UTC
I am not asking for user support. I believe KDE is behaving very badly on my hardware for some non obvious reason.

Even if there is no crash I believe it has to be considered as a bug as the system is just not usable under KDE. Average joe would give up on KDE quite fast with such behavior ... I have to switch to XFCE to be able to use my system which is a pity.

I can confirm this bug.
Happend for me since I tested first KDE 4.x which was 4.1 beta on my PC
I have an Onboard SIS and LG CRT Monitor.
tried several Window Managers with the same Ubuntu Base 8.04 -> 8.10 -> 9.04
(Enlightenment, Gnome, XFCE all work fine) so i don't think it's a X bug.

Only on KDE I get something like random monitor sync errors (hard to describe) which really seem to happen more, when I move the mouse.
For me it's just black for less than a second, but enough to dismiss KDE for this system.
