Version: (using KDE 4.1.2) Installed from: Slackware Packages I think it would be nice to have an alternative network engine to the networkmanager one available in kde. wicd [1] is a lightweight network manager written in python which uses dbus as well. wicd is less intrusive then networkmanager, so I think a lot of distros would like to use it instead, at least a lot of users would definitely enjoy to have an alternative available. I only can second this request. In my opinion wicd is much easier to use and configure then NetworkManager. The only thing it lacks is a decent QT-based GUI (though it should be possible to code, as the developers have published some example code).
I'm already working on this, and already agreed with the Wicd guys themselves. We'll start working together in a pair of weeks.
What is the status of this Network Engine? The Git repository has not had a commit for 2+ Months now.
Yeah, network-manager stinks, and wicd is great, but it haven't a QT gui. A lot of blogs recommends to remove network-manager and use wicd even in kde, and me and my friends do, we're happier now XD.
Oops, forgot about this bug. The Wicd engine is finished and it's in KDE 4.3. Now it's missing the integration with the plasma applet to actually get a usable GUI. Don't mind opening another bug: it is already planned, you will be notified when that happens
