Description m.schieren 2008-10-12 12:07:06 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.2)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package

I am using KDEmod, but a friend told me that this also happens on his openSUSE+KDE4 installation:

When a Wine-Application is open (for example Ultrasurf ( http://ultrareach.com ) or what my friend uses: foobar2000 ( http://foobar2000.org ), my KDE desktop starts to flicker. Some areas just get black and sometimes it goes away, when I move the mouse over it, but then other areas start to do this. It also happens with the wallpaper. Then I minimize the program into tray and its normal again.
I noticed this since I installed KDE4 (.0.0 afaik) and its still happening up to this version.

Thanks for reading, it would be great if this was solved in future versions :)

What's your graphics card and what driver version are you running?

Does it still occur in KDE 4.2?
Comment 2 Jonathan Thomas 2008-12-28 19:13:07 UTC
I can confirm this with KDE 4.1.85 using the nvidia 96.43.09 drivers.
I can get it to happen with 100% reproducibility by launching Flash 8.
Comment 3 Lubos Lunak 2009-01-01 23:09:48 UTC
Please try using recent nvidia drivers.
Comment 4 Jonathan Thomas 2009-01-01 23:11:40 UTC
These are the most recent available for my card. (Released a month or so ago)
Comment 5 Georg Grabler 2009-03-14 22:06:15 UTC
For me, the same issue still exists using:
KDE 4.2.1
nvidia 180.37

32 bit system running arch linux.
Without running KDE this problem does not appear (gnome, xfce4, openbox).
Comment 6 Martin Flöser 2009-12-15 23:38:08 UTC
is this still an issue (most likely a driver bug)?
Comment 7 Jonathan Thomas 2009-12-15 23:56:48 UTC
Still happening with KDE SC 4.3.80. It also happens with the vesa driver, for what it's worth.
Comment 8 Martin Flöser 2009-12-16 00:00:04 UTC
Thanks for the info. That only happens when compositing is active, isn't it?

(I only remember this issue for Eclipse and OpenOffice.org, but for those it is fixed).
Comment 9 Jonathan Thomas 2009-12-16 00:02:25 UTC
Nope, no compositing here. I wish I could use it though. :(

> ) or what my friend uses: foobar2000 ( http://foobar2000.org ), my KDE desktop

By /desktop/ you actually mean the /desktop/ (i.e. plasma, the thing with the wallpaper, the gadgets an some panels) or is everything (i.e. "normal" windows - the entire "desktop environment") affected?
Comment 11 Jonathan Thomas 2009-12-16 00:27:12 UTC
Everything is affected; the whole screen blanks back until the objects paint again, whether they be part of Konsole or the Plasma panel.
Comment 12 Jonathan Thomas 2009-12-16 00:27:28 UTC
s/blanks back/blanks to black/
Comment 13 Martin Flöser 2009-12-16 09:22:56 UTC
just a fair guess: please try to set

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1

before starting wine from the Konsole.
Comment 14 Jonathan Thomas 2009-12-16 14:24:50 UTC
No change with that exported.
Comment 15 Martin Flöser 2011-05-13 18:01:14 UTC
as this affects non composited, it's not a KWin issue.
