Description Janet 2008-10-08 12:04:52 UTC
Version: 1.9.9 (using 3.5.9, Debian Package 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-6 (lenny/sid))
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.26-5.slh.9-sidux-686

Alas there are a lot of webpages that don't work with konqueror, especially sites making use of javascript. For this case it would be very helpful if when reading an email notification I could choose with which browser I want to open the link in that email (e.g. meineleute.de, last.fm, emusic.com I need to open with firefox). As it is now I always have to copy the link address, open firefox and paste the address... So this is a request for a context menu for links in mails in kmail where all installed browsers are listed to alternatively open the URL with one of them instead of with the standard browser.

You can configure in kde which browser you want to use when you click on url
So not necessary to add this menu.
I close it

I would suggest to reopen. Of course one can configure which browser should be the main browser in KDE, but as I understand this wish, this is about selecting a different browser on case to case basis which is needed when certain pages do not work in the standard browser (but one does not want to change the standard browser). Dolphin has an "Open With" in the context menu showing the other programs capable of opening a specfic filetype. This should be implemented in Kmail in the same way.

no I will not reopen.
We will not add more and more menu to specific feature.
By default people uses a specific browser, they will not test/select rekonq to see if it's good or not, or konqueror etc.
They will select from kde better browser for them.

I don't want add new menu just for it.

Hmm, I am not sure you understand. Its not about testing a different browser. It is about knowing in advance that a certain page received by mail will not work the default browser.

In my example I still have Konqueror set as my main browser because I like its KDE integration even though it fails with some pages. It fails for example with Ebay pages (bug is reported, not ebay as such, but there are some things which do not work). So if I receive an email from Ebay with a link in it, I need to open it in Firefox. An "Open with ->" and the list of available browsers would help very much (would save the copy and paste). At the moment the context menu when clicking on a link contains 4 elements, a fift and then a submenu with the available browsers would not take so much space.

Ebay is just an example. Unfortunately the web/browsers are a moving target and at the moment it seems like utopia to have one browser for all purposes/pages. I know of many people who use more than one browser (not really by choice, but because it does not work otherwise).

Instead of adding additional context menu entries you could also make use of the middle mouse button to let the user open links in a second browser. Left click opens in default browser, middle click opens in alternative browser.

It's exactly as m.wege@web.de says. One has a default browser and the need to open certain URLs with another one because the sites do not work correctly with your default and otherwise loved browser. You might say that it's the problem of the browser devs. In first place it is, yes. You are right in saying that by default people use a specific browser, yes, but that's not the point. And do you really want to advice the people using konqueror to switch to another browser?

I did, finally. And yes, it was the lack of this feature in Kmail that led me to the decision. I like konqueror a lot and would love to use it as default browser for most of the sites but I didn't like that I have to copy & paste specific URLs in KMail to temporarily use another browser. It's about convenience and workflow, so I switched completely because of Kmail's lack of assistance. Kind of funny isn't it?

BTW there are other use cases where it might be helpful to be able to open a link from kmail in another than the default browser: Imagine two persons using one computer with one user profile (no, they don't want two profiles because they don't want to hide things from each other etc...). They use kmail with two accounts, no problem. But they use different browsers because they want different bookmarks and need different cookies to be set. One of them always has to copy & paste the links. Or two people using the same bookmarks but e.g. just having two facebook accounts or the like. So they want to open all links for email address 1 with konqueror and all links from address 2 with firefox. Or one person with private and job accounts and the need for different browsers for different email addresses...

Well, I just found the launchy add-on for thunderbird which does exactly what we requested for kmail... so yes, kind of resolved for me I guess.
