to reproduce
open a sftp connection
split view top/bottom
copy file from sftp view to new view (which is empty)
Error "Malformed URL"

this is because no URL is available for the new split view.

Suggestion:
if target URL is empty
Message "Please define target URL"

Is this valid even for other protocols like ftp or smb?

I just tried to check with 3.5.9

splitting a view top/bottom uses the first address also for the new window

I have no possibility to test smb or whatsoever from my other box with KDE 4.1

Not a kio sftp issue, but in konqueror 4.2.1 doing the steps you specified will simply attempt to open the source url. That is it does the right thing...

yes works fine in 4.2.1
