Description renguoqin 2008-08-18 21:11:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.1.0)
OS: FreeBSD
Installed from: FreeBSD Ports

The first time Konsole worked well. Then I closed it. When I open Konsole again: it closed automatically once it's started. The only thing I can do is to reboot the computer. But the same things will happen again.

Silly question:
I'm assuming you opened konsole by clicking through the menus. Did you click on "Terminal Program - Super User Mode" or "Terminal Program"?

The first one shows up at the top of my menu, and if I'm not careful, I open that. Which doesn't work, as I get no prompt for a root password. And no Konsole opens. (I can't find this in bz at all... Nobody has complained?)

When you reboot, KDE's session management opens Konsole, so if that works, I don't think this is an actual konsole bug.

Actually, since it's probably using plasma or something to open konsole, and this is a FreeBSD port, well I don't think Konsole itself uses KJS, but the rest does. So I'm forwarding this to the freebsd people.

Thanks. It might not be a bug. But certainly there is something wrong with KDE 4.1 FreeBSD port.

If you can get an update that might help, but I'm not sure if it was completely fixed yet. (The general symbol clashes.)

I've not noticed this behaviour on FreeBSD 7.0-STABLE/amd64 or /i386 at all. And from discussing with some others, they've not seen it either.

I forgot to mention that this only happen when I login as a normal user. When I login as root, the console behaves well.
Comment 7 A. Spehr 2008-08-23 02:43:07 UTC
And you're sure that you're hitting the right konsole icon?
Comment 8 renguoqin 2008-09-02 22:28:01 UTC
Yes.
Also, I tried " File -> New Window" in the opened Konsole. There will be a new window, but it will disappear immediately.
Comment 9 andy 2008-09-03 01:20:51 UTC
does this happen for a newly created user?

Yes. I add a new user. Login and start Konsole. The Konsole window close immediately after it's opened.

Can you still reproduce this bug with a recent KDE version? (4.1.3 / 4.2beta2 / 4.2svn) (if any of these versions are present on the ports) Thanks :)

Reopen if you can duplicate it on the latest KDE and verify not a packaging/port issue.

I can't say if this is the same as the original reporter, but it does seem that in plasma, when typing it, the two konsole choices come up, and then if you hit return, it picks the first in the list. The first is the superuser mode one! In my case, it does just vanish without a trace. Presumably it ought to actually ask for a password, but it doesn't.

I would find it a lot less annoying if
a) the other were the first to show up as default
b) i suspect regular users would like to be able to pick the superuser version (maybe something in my install messes that up?)

I'm running trunk. I get the idea this is a plasma bug, and out of your area?
