Description Max Greenblatt 2008-07-23 18:55:15 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.98)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

When I boot my Asus R1F laptop, running opensuse 11 w/ KDE4 RC1, kwin, kdesktop, and kicker all fail to start. I can start kdesktop manually (because ALT-F2 still opens the run dialog). When I start kicker it only has the home icon and it appears to be a kde3 kicker (I also have opensuse 10.3 w/ KDE 3.5 installed on this laptop as well if that could be causing this. Then for kwin it might not be crashing, but I think it is. My windows still have a window manager, but when I try to restart kwin in konsole I get a sigsev (i forget the code #, but I can get you that if you need it). Other than the above problems the laptop appears to run fine though. I have internet and can start any program I want from the run dialog, so it's more of an annoyance than anything else. Thanks in advance for your help!
Comment 1 Martin Flöser 2008-07-23 19:37:02 UTC
Please not that there is no kdesktop and no kicker in KDE 4. If you start those programs the KDE 3.5 version will be started. The "new" desktop is plasma. So please try to start plasma and check if the problems are still persistent.
Comment 2 Max Greenblatt 2008-07-23 19:51:59 UTC
I tried to stark plasma and here's what happened:

1. I got a signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
2. The following output in my terminal

Plasma crashed, attempting to automatically recover
KCrash: Application 'plasma' crashing...

Comment 4 lucas 2008-07-24 18:57:32 UTC
(no debugging symbols found) means that you do not have the debug symbols installed and therefore the crash reports are useless for developers. Please install the debug packages provided by your distributor.

Hi I just installed updated kdebase to 4.1.0-17.6 on Opensuse 11 and still have the same issue.
