Description Benno Dielmann 2008-07-18 17:43:29 UTC
Version: 2.1 (using KDE 4.0.98)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

Mouse gestures just don't work. If I kill the khotkeys daemon and restart it in konsole, it prints

khotkeys(5000): ShortcutsHandler::send_macro_key not implemented!!!

every time I execute a known (configured) gesture.
Comment 1 Benno Dielmann 2008-07-20 11:35:45 UTC
If mouse gestures aren't (re-)implemented yet for KDE 4.1, the respective options in the khotkeys settings dialog should be removed or at least greyed out.
Comment 2 Michael Jansen 2008-07-22 19:02:36 UTC
Gestures will either be gone for 4.2 or hopefully working again.

Well, I very much hope they will be there again. Global mouse gestures was one of KDE's greatest features, IMHO.
Comment 5 KonstantinKo 2008-11-08 09:38:51 UTC
Gesture tweaking dialog don't saves anything I change. Looks like 'save' function also not implemented yet.

Opensuse 11.0 (KDE 4.1.3 "release 51.1")
Comment 6 Tobias Leupold 2008-12-21 17:39:18 UTC
Mouse gestures are still broken on my Gentoo system using KDE 4.1.85 (4.2 Beta 2). Neither the khotkeys dialog works, nor do the basic Konqueror gestures. I would really appreciate mouse gestures being back in 4.2 final!
Comment 7 Michal Svoboda 2008-12-21 20:25:42 UTC
I vote for re-inclusion of mouse gestures. I'm used to them as a part of my daily work. As a matter of fact, I fail to understand how such an extremely useful feature is considered for removal. (Re-working of the input actions system should not be used as an excuse.)
Comment 8 KonstantinKo 2008-12-21 20:47:01 UTC
Mouse gestures in konqueror(KDE3) and firefox is real big part of my life. I think, mouse-clicking hell should be avoided at least in konqueror4 and in dolphin.
Comment 9 Tobias Leupold 2009-01-03 18:30:34 UTC
Konqueror's mouse gestures are still broken in 4.1.87 (built by Gentoo ebuilds). The gesture config dialog from the system settings is also (still) broken. I can only turn on the "Konqueror gestures" group, but clicking one of the gestures does not open a config dialog (leaving the overall description of the Konqueror gestures group open), and none of them can be checked.
Comment 10 Tobias Leupold 2009-01-15 19:39:03 UTC
Still broken in exactly the same way in RC 1 (4.1.96).
Comment 11 Tobias Leupold 2009-01-20 10:35:54 UTC
Is anybody working on this? In one week, KDE 4.2 final will be out ... will it be released with broken features?
Comment 12 mb1 2009-01-23 21:10:46 UTC
Bump. This lack of functionality is really crippling for Konqueror in comparison with virtually every other browser on the market...only a few days to 4.2 scheduled release-and crippled apps?

on KDE4.1.96
Comment 13 Oldřich Jedlička 2009-01-30 18:51:52 UTC
I do not see anything in KDE-4.2. I really miss that feature :-(
Comment 14 Neil Skrypuch 2009-02-01 21:20:17 UTC
Confirming that mouse gestures are still broken in KDE 4.2. It seems that the khotkeys UI has totally removed any mention of them as well...
Comment 15 Frank Roscher 2009-02-01 22:35:43 UTC
As it seems that it will take quite a while yet until someone takes this up people might be interested in a temporary replacement.
I suggest having a look at EasyStroke:
http://easystroke.wiki.sourceforge.net/

It's a GTK application, unfortunately, but it works well and it even supports arbitrarily shaped gestures - which makes it better than the system in KDE3.

If the gesture system needed an overhaul anyway I think EasyStroke's algorithms should be considered for that.
Comment 16 David Broome 2009-02-01 23:42:42 UTC
I just wanted to second what Frank said.

I've been using it for the past year (since we lost mouse guestures) and it works great.
Comment 17 mb1 2009-02-02 15:56:50 UTC
Another alternative, for those with multibutton mice is xbindkeys:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6017927&postcount=1134

What would be nice is if we could either have gestures back, or xbindkeys integrated with KDE-or both.
Comment 18 Tobias Leupold 2009-02-03 01:05:53 UTC
The easystroke package really does work fine! Thanks for the tip :-)
Comment 19 Michael Jansen 2009-02-04 23:09:35 UTC
Fixes ended with about revision 920912 . Code will get release with kde 4.3 . We will not backport.

Still work in progress. The gui is ugly, the code has many bugs. So beware. I take bug reports for trunk tho. Gesture work for now.

Everyone relying on working gestures should keep using the gnome alternative for now.

Mike

Thanks Michael. It looks like I can start fully using KDE 4 as soon as 4.3 get out :-)
Comment 21 David Broome 2009-02-05 01:18:26 UTC
Dang it. I had just gotten out of trunk.

Looks like it's time to go back :)
Comment 22 Neil Skrypuch 2009-08-09 20:37:30 UTC
Mouse gestures seem to be working nicely in KDE 4.3.0 now.

One notable thing that's missing is a preconfigured set of mouse gestures for Konqueror, much like KDE 3.5 had. I was able to to configure them myself without too much difficulty (less a mostly fruitless adventure down the DBUS path... I couldn't find the activate next/previous tab commands in there), but it'd be nice if they were just there.
