Description Jay LaCroix 2008-07-15 21:44:48 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
OS: Linux

I upgraded to KDE 4.1 RC1 today, I deleted my .kde folders and started with a fresh configuration and when I log in to a fresh RC1 installation, the desktop background is all black, no wallpaper is selected by default, although the desktop settings applet says that there is a wallpaper.

After you change the wallpaper, all is fine, but trying to see the plasma configuration handles is next to impossible on an all black desktop.
Comment 1 Anne-Marie Mahfouf 2008-07-15 22:25:09 UTC
Can you try again by doing kquitapp plasma in a terminal, then removing your .kde4 and restarting plasma with: plasma
and paste all output in terminal from there if you can reproduce this black screen.

Thanks in advance!
Comment 2 Jay LaCroix 2008-07-15 23:01:41 UTC
I'm marking this as resolved for now. I thought that all of KDE 4.1 RC1 was installed but more packages are coming, I guess Kubuntu wasn't done compiling everything. I'm going to leave this resolved unless someone else has the problem.

After fully updating KDE4, I have this problem on two machines. I followed the instructions as advised with a different user account, and this is the output:
(I ran the dolphin command so I could delete the .kde folders).

krystal@jeremy-laptop:~$ kquitapp plasma
krystal@jeremy-laptop:~$ dolphin

can you post your `kde4-config --localprefix`/share/config/plasma-appletsrc file to this report please? thanks =)

i really think this is just a packaging snafu, though.
Comment 6 Jay LaCroix 2008-07-16 04:22:03 UTC
Nothing happens when I paste that command, I get a ">" that expects me
to put in something...

does "/home/jeremy/Pictures/Memories/Ann's Wedding" exist?
Comment 10 Jay LaCroix 2008-07-16 04:50:18 UTC
Yeah, that's my current wallpaper right now, did I need to do that as a
fresh user?

new user is unnecessary; here's an easier way:

1. in a konsole, run: kquitapp plasma
2. move (not delete!) the plasma-appletsrc file somewhere (e.g. to your home dir)
3. run: plasma
4. confirm you still see nasty blackness
5. run: kquitapp plasa
6. post the new plasma-appletsrc to this br
7. move the plasma-appletsrc file from step 2 back
8. run: plasma

$KDEDIR here means where KDE is installed, for example /usr or /opt/kde.

Can you please provide your screen resolution and the contents/existance of

$KDEDIR/share/wallpapers/Blue_Curl/contents/images/

Thanks

Jemery says it's gone in 4.1 final.

Jeremy: when you're replying to bugs, please use bugs.kde.org (ie: the link at the top of the email). The new bugzilla installation doesn't set reply-to properly (yet), so your reply doesn't appear as a comment in the bug report.
