Version: (using KDE 4.0.83) OS: Linux When I search for something using kickoff's top search bar, the found applications are showed twice, but I noticed, that only KDE4 applications are shown twice. For example if I search for Firefox, it shows only one result, but if that's any K4 application, it's always twice there. And it is NOT twice in the menu itself, I mean if I browse through the Applications menu, it's only once in there.

do you have kde3 installed as well?
Well I would say I do, but Fedora 9 comes with KDE 4 only, but there are also installed packages like kdelibs3, kdebase3 and a few other kde*3.

do the duplications start the kde3 and the kde4 versions? (meaning they aren't really dupes at all, but different versions of the same application)
I noticed this too while playing around with a demo of Crossover Office 7. The entries (added by the CX installer after installing a windows application) appear twice in the search results. I can post a screenshot if needed.
Aaron: No, both of them starts the kde4 version. In fact, KDE3 apps (only few like Amarok, K3B, Kdevelop or few others) are not shown twice in the search results. Nor are the GNOME apps. Only the KDE4 applications as you can see on the screenshot I posted. And I also checked both results for version and they are both the same app (and same version of course). I guess it must be search bug, because the apps are not present twice when browsing categories normally through Applications tab.
Do you still get this with 4.1? If so, do you get the same issue using KRunner (press ALT+F2, and type in the search term there)? Also, can you please paste the output of ls ~/.local/share/applications for us? Thanks
Yeah, I'm still getting this error with 4.1. And KRunner is not showing double results. And here's the output: $ ls ~/.local/share/applications/ gimp.desktop mimeapps.list preferred-mail-reader.desktop preferred-web-browser.desktop wine I'm thinking that the bug might be caused by previous installation of KDE 4.0.5 (as Fedora 9 was shipped with) and later then I just updated KDE to 4.1 from Rawhide repository and I'm thinking, that the original menu files (from 4.0.5) weren't overwritten by this update, but the update created new menu files instead.
Hi ! I am experiencing a similar problem on Debian with KDE 4.1.1. But I finally came up with an explanation: the duplication is caused by the "Debian menu". A folder "Debian" is inserted in the Kde menu, with menu entries inserted at the installation of packages. These menu entries must refer to icons in the 32x32 xpm format, that are included with the package. That explains also why the icons are different and old-fashioned when compared to oxygen icons. Maybe the other distributions have a similar complementary menu system ? Cédric

I cannot reproduce this error now since I updated to 4.1.80 (KDE 4.2 Beta1) Fedora 10/kde-redhat

Hi, I'm experiencing this issue again. Now the duplication is not only in search bar of kickoff but also in krunner. Cédric has mentioned that the cause of the duplication is "Debian-menu", so I'm here wondering if this is just a distribution issue, because I'm also using Debian and I've realized, if I remove all files in /var/lib/menu-xdg/applications/menu-xdg/, which relates to Debian menu system, the duplication is just gone. However, every time I install a new application, the menu would be updated and all files in that folder are there again. Thus, the duplication happens again.
