Description Urtzi Jauregi 2008-06-27 16:52:36 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I have several data files on my /home/urtzi/Desktop directory. Under KDE 3.x up to KDE 4.1 Beta1, I was able to see each file as an icon on the desktop. However, under Beta2 I can't see them anymore. Moving files to /~Desktop under Beta2 doesn't show them either.

The FolderView applet should open and display your files from ~/Desktop.
Do you have the FolderView shown on your desktop at start of beta2? If not, can you try a new user please?
Comment 2 Urtzi Jauregi 2008-06-27 17:30:16 UTC
Anne-Marie: I created a new user, and the behavior is the same. No luck so far.

Where can I find the FolderView applet? It's not in the desktop widget list.

I had this problem using a language other than English (in my case, Portuguese).

This (my) problem is that Kubuntu-KDE4 Remix (I don't know about Kubuntu KDE3 or any other version of Ubuntu) creates Desktop folder with the translated name instead of "Desktop" (again in my case, "Área de Trabalho"). So, folderview couldn't find the "Desktop" folder by default. Pointing it to that (ugly solution of) corresponding folder worked ok with 4.1 beta1.

I had the other problem too, not finding folderview in "Add Widget" list in beta2 and, again, I think it's kde4-plasmoids Ubuntu package's fault.

For both cases, I wouldn't be sure till I build KDE4.1 from trunk but, if confirmed by the reporter (or someone else), I think those are the problems (and then none would be about KDE4.1).

I just checked in French with a fresh config and:
1) folderview is shown as default with the ~/Desktop content (you can display more instances of it and with other folders of course)
2) works in French as well as in English

FolderView has been integrated in kdebase the 8th June so Urtzi you have to ask your distribution if they have it and when was packaged the Beta 2.

Closing as invalid!

Yes; I use the default English installation where the desktop is actually called Desktop, so it can't be that. I guess it's a packaging issue; I'll go pester The Kubuntu people instead. Thank you everybody!

The Debian/Kubuntu plasmoid packages have moved around with the inclusion of the kdeplasmoids module. Base plasma applets (including folderview) can be found in kdebase-plasma-kde4 and the kdeplasmoid module plasmoids can be found in the kdeplasmoids package.

Jonathan: Thank you. I installed kdebase-plasma-kde4 and now I can use FolderView. But now I see my files in a window, which is not exactly what I want. Is there a way to put the files directly on the desktop, as in KDE 3?

Urtzi, as far as i know, that "window" is folderview and that's how it's intented to get (beside other features) that file managing behaviour on the Desktop that we had at KDE3.

You can always place icons on the Desktop but they would lose file managing capabilities, being more like a shortcut or a link, e.g. if you delete it it wouldn't delete the file.

Just to avoid having this conversation again:
You will be able to revert to a traditional desktop with icons on it by using the folderview as your containment in 4.2. It is possible now, but then you get no background picture and have to configure it manually.
