Description Victor-Philipp Busch 2008-06-23 19:19:43 UTC
Version: 0.9.3 (using 3.5.9, Debian Package 4:3.5.9.dfsg.1-4 (lenny/sid))
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.21.3

Hi there,

digikam is one of the greates tools for KDE. But if you work with RAWs its very slow. I make on one day round about 4000 RAW-pictures. I download it with digikam (works fast) but then comes the first (of three) phase of reviewing, sorting and deleting (round about 100 pics survive this action after three phases).

Digikam is in this phase very very slow. It would be nice if digikam catch all of my 4GB-RAM (RAM is cheap at you can't buy a PC with less then 2GB I think) for cache. But the lighttable is very slow.

I think you know about a photographer works: click-click-click... - so I see the pics in all tools as a slideshow with little different movings in it.
As workaround for the slow lighttable I use the slideshow to review the pics.

That is ok, I see the pics on the whole screen in a good speed then. But I miss a button or a keyboard shortcut to rate the pics in the slideshow. In my opinion it would be a big step for digikam to manage photos.

Have you tried to use the full-screen mode of the icon view
and using the (default) configuration option that the embedded preview
is used on display? This should work reasonbly fast due to
pre-loading of the next image and the image cache.
There rating can be done with the usual short-cuts.

Also,a bit more precise analysis has to be done: namely, why do you think
that more RAM would help to speed up the light-table? Is it already fast
enough when used with a few images?

But your main point (apart from the complaint that digikam is too slow
when working with RAWs) in this wish, is to allow for rating in
the slideshow, right?

If so, I would suggest that you analyse the speed issues you encounter
with the light-table in more detail, and discuss this in a separate wish.
I.e. my point is: it is important to keep separate issues separate
in the bug-tracker, because otherwise the discussion will not
be focussed well enough ... ;-)

Best, Arnd

Hi Arnd,

you are right: this is the "bug" for the slideshow, not for the light-table. Light-table is not my favorite tool. I want digikam to sort, review, delete and move my images and have a nice database for it. But in this "bug" I wish only a button/shortcut to rate the pictures in the slideshow.

I tried the fullscreen mode of the icon view (you mean click on an picture icon and go up or back then). But is slow too. My system has an AMD X64 DualCore 4800+ with 4GB RAM and a RAID5 with only 6GB System on it. I cant belive, that it is so slow. On my notebook its the same problem. But I will test it in the next days again.

Ok, then this wish is a duplicate...
