Version: (using KDE 4.0.80) Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package OS: Linux First, I'm sorry if this is filed in the wrong section. I'm not sure which part of kde is responsible for creating the thumbnail icons you get if you have preview-mode on. Feel free to move if this the wrong one :) I have quite a few odt-files on my computer and they behave quite differently when it comes to Dolphin showing me previews of them. I get three different varieties: 1. For most of them I just get the regular icon (that is, the same icon I would get if I were to have previews turned off). 2. For some, I get a proper preview. 3. And for some, I get a sort-of preview (that is, not a icon but the preview is basically just a "white paper" with a miniature icon in the lower right corner). I think it depends on which program was used to save the file, but I am not entirely sure. I know most of them were saved using OpenOffice Writer, and as far as I can tell they are the ones that exhibit behavior 1. A few were saved using an earlier version of KWord (not sure exactly which one, but it was of the KDE3.x variety). I never used that program much so I'm pretty sure those few files are the ones that exhibit behavior 2. I did try to open a few of the behavior 1 files using KWord 2 (alpha 6) and re-saved them under a different name, and they have so far only exhibited behavior 3. So, it does seem like the behavior is partially dependent on which word processor was used but I do not know if that is the only reason. And as far as I can remember, KDE3 did not show this behavior (although I didn't have any files saved using KWord 2 at that time). And no, this is not because the files are too large. They differ in size obviously but the largest one is only arond 50k.
Thanks Jonas for the detailed description, I've moved this to kdelibs (Dolphin uses the class PreviewJob internally).
