People tend to love Kickoff as soon as they discover how to add favorites. By defaulting to the favorites tab, Kickoff is extremely pleasant to use once you have set up your favorites.

However many people don't understand that, because they never tried right-clicking a menu entry.

I believe that when the mouse is over a menu entry, a button (just a "+" icon) "Add to Favorites" should smoothly appear next to it. Much like in the list of plasma widgets in Plasma "add widgets" dialog. Thus adding a favorite would just require one left button click, and more importantly, would be much more discoverable.

I don't love kickoff but I do love context menus. So I certainly vote for keeping the add to favorites entry in the context menu. But I have to agree it is not intuitive for people coming from other OS so there should be a second way... Tastymenu does it right IMHO: it shows a small favorites star next to the entry when hovering over the entry and when you click on that star you add the entry to the favorites menu. I really was astonished not to see the same behaviour in kickoff. My vote for it, yes, it definitely is more intuitive and usable. But please keep the context menu.

I think a context menu makes the most sense and an-always-present on-hover option would get distracting fast, but have such a feature on by default (but can be turned off) would be good for users who aren't used to right-clicking

I disagree that the context menu makes "most sense" since even for experienced users it can be a surprise where the "Add to favorites" is hidden.. I certainly was surprised it to be hidden under a right mouse click.

I think the kickoff menu structure should change a bit and always show a "star" outline in a light grey tone that won't draw the attention and thus won't distract you. When a user hovers on the menu item the star outline just remains the same, but when the user hovers the star outline within the menu it should "light up" and be clickable. Or to make it understandable. Look in firefox and chrome how you can add a link to your favorites. That idea should be applied to kickoff as well in my opinion.

Hello!

This feature request was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this feature request is already implemented in Plasma 5, or is no longer applicable.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this feature request. If the requested feature is still desired but not implemented in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
