Description Vito De Tullio 2008-06-11 08:55:35 UTC
Version: 0.6.3 (using KDE 3.5.9)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

I'm italian, but when I try to read a (for example) japanese document in 2-side-view, I find pages in wrong order, because the reading is from right-to-left, not left-to-right.
Can you add a button to reverse the order?

Can you please attach (if possible) a japanese document?
Comment 2 Pino Toscano 2009-01-12 11:50:46 UTC
Any sample document, please?

After a bit of research I found the following page were you can have a look at the bible in japanese: http://www.biblica.com/bibles/japanese/index.php it is written from left to right, I asked wikipedia and it told me:

"Traditionally, Japanese is written in a format called tategaki. In this format, the characters are written in columns going from top to bottom, with columns ordered from right to left. After reaching the bottom of each column, the reader continues at the top of the column to the left of the current one. This copies the column order of Chinese.
Modern Japanese also uses another writing format, called yokogaki. This writing format is horizontal and reads from left to right."

So I'd say this bug can be marked solved.

@Jakob Lehmann:
uh? The reporter is speaking about the layout of the *pages* shown in Okular, not about the text rendering.
The PDF standard has a simple attribute to hint viewers to layout pages ina right-to-left layout instead of a left-to-right, that's why I asked the reporter for a test case.

Yes you are right, I dont know why but I somehow assumed that Japanese was either left-to-right or top-to-bottom and thus would not need any right-to-left page rendering, I did not think of the collums though. Please forgive my stupidity.

Just to add samples, on http://divajutta.com/doctormo/ubunchu/ you can find many english translation of japanese manga on pdf.

Just to add a direct link, here is a Right-to-left pdf:

I'm using

KDE Development Platform: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) "release 2"
Okular: 0.10.4

and this problem is still there.

Compared to the 2-sided view in acroread the ordering is wrong. I expect the pages to appear on my screen as if I were holding a book right in front of my nose.

Example:

If viewing a pdf with a title page this is what okular displays in 'facing pages' mode:

TP, P2
P3, P4
P5, P6
...

but it should be like this:

TP, -- (or TP alone + centered)
P2, P3
P4, P5
P6, P7
...

Even page numbers must appear on the left, odd page numbers on the right side of the screen.

This is extremely confusing when checking self-compiled .pdf documents for proper page order/alignment issues.

#7 What you want can be done since ages, you yeah complaining is more difficult than looking in the settings menu, hint "Center first page in facing mode"
Comment 9 madworm_de.kde 2010-08-13 21:35:38 UTC
Such a config option does not exist by that name in my version of okular.

It would be more sensible to add another 'profile' to the view mode selection named 'book view' or 'reading mode'. A place where people would look at first.

where the option should be

Are you trying to be funny?

I know there is an option 'center first page', but that is not what you were talking about. Read your comment. If it is meant to be 'center first page in facing mode' it should be called that way.

Personally I'd favor putting that into the view mode dialog, which is where it naturally belongs.SSS
Comment 12 Albert Astals Cid 2010-08-13 23:03:39 UTC
No, i'm not trying to be funny, i'm trying to help *you*, while you are still hijacking a bug that isn't about you complain.

Ah, and BTW in KDE 4.5 the option is where you want it, you shouldn't be using old software when reporting bugs.

Anyway i'm closing this bug because it got hijacked and now is worthless.

Original reported if in KDE 4.5 you can still reproduce your problem please open a new bug.

Thanks for using Okular

This is getting depressing...

I'm using the latest okular that is available to me without compiling it from source. If I started doing that I'd be running make && make install 24/7.

If bugs are reported at the distributors bugzilla, quite often what you hear is "please report upstream". There (here) you get told "not to use old software".

This is not exactly encouraging to do any bug reports at all.

A nice day to you as well.
