Description David Förster 2008-06-09 18:29:45 UTC
Version:            (using KDE 3.5.9)
Installed from:    Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS:                Linux

I just configured kmail to use my newly created S/Mime key to sign outgoing mails. However, when I try to send a message it says:

"Signierung fehlgeschlagen: General error"
The button "Prüfprotokoll anzeigen" triggers another popup:
"Für diese Operation ist kein GnuPG-Prüfprotokoll verfügbar."

I have no idea what the problem might be. The gpgsm S/Mime support is properly configured in the preferences.

Any help is appreciated.

I just switched the language to get the english error messages:

"Signing failed: General error"

Click button "Show Audit Log" =>
"No GnuPG Audit Log available for this operation."

All in all not very helpful.

Did you install the gnupg + gnupg2 packages ?
Comment 3 David Förster 2008-06-10 18:10:47 UTC
Yes, both packages are installed.

Command line output with debugging enabled

I recompiled kmail with debugging enabled. This is the commandline output when
trying to sign a message.

The "General Error" can be avoided by passing --allow-mark-trusted to gpg-agent.
In newer versions, the audit log button is not shown anymore if the underlying backends don't support that.

I have the same problem with kmail 1.11.0 kde 4.2 on gentoo. Exactly the same dialog with "show audit log". Apparently --allow-mark-trusted does not make a difference. I am unable to make further tests right now, will post if I find something new.
Comment 7 subscryer 2009-02-10 11:28:20 UTC
The problem mysteriously disappeared today. Maybe some kde/kmail settings needed a reboot of the whole pc? For example I can open kleopatra from kmail today, yesterday I couldn't even if it was installed. Anyway it works for me now.

I experience this bug with kmail 1.12.0 (KDE 4.2.95)

Attached KWatchGnuPG log file, only things that show up are:

  5 - 2009-07-13 18:46:18 gpg-agent[16126.0] DBG: <- HAVEKEY FD853BCAA50F0DDA21CED0DFFCFAF188A0DAD948
  5 - 2009-07-13 18:46:18 gpg-agent[16126.0] DBG: -> ERR 67108881 No secret key <GPG Agent>

Which seems to be correct since this is the Root-CA.

And:

  4 - 2009-07-13 18:46:18 gpgsm[16134.0] DBG: <- GETAUDITLOG --data --html
  4 - 2009-07-13 18:46:18 gpgsm[16134.0] DBG: -> ERR 50331706 No data <GpgSM>

Using gnupg-2.0.12 and gpgme-1.2.0.

I still experience the same issue on KDE 4.10.3: when trying to sign a file through Kleopatra, it fails with a "ERR 50331706 No data <GpgSM>" error in the log file. Note that signing files via the command line (gpgsm --sign) works.

Since this report of so old, I wonder whether it is resolved for the OP. Are there any updates on this?

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2.

We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
