Description Saulo Toledo 2008-06-09 15:45:03 UTC
Version: 4.0.81 (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
OS: Linux

It's simple, Ark doesn't extract files. :-S

This happens since I've installed KDE4. I'm with 4.0.81 now and the problem continues...

At least provide example of archive that does not work.
Comment 2 Painkiller101 2008-06-10 13:56:28 UTC
I can confirm this problem, but it just seems to happen when i try to extract an rar-archive. Worked definitely with tar.gz-archives.

I can confirm this bug, I'm now with 4.0.82 (opensuse 11, kde4 from unstable repos). I tried to extract a tar.gz,tar, zip and ark only extracts files, It doens't extracts directories neither the files inside directories.

I am using the 4.1 release version of Ark and I am still getting this error. All archives simply fail to work (zip, tar.gz, rar, you name it). Most of the time, it gives me a "Cannot write to destination" error even though all my permissions are correct. Sometimes it only extracts some of the files and then fails silently. It's very frustrating having to install some other zip utility that's written in GTK (which IMHO looks really ugly in KDE) and not integrated into KDE. How in the world did this get into the FINAL release build?
Comment 7 Florian Sievert 2008-07-31 15:17:04 UTC
I cannot confirm this issue on my fedora system with KDE 4.1 final. I just tested some different archives types (tar.bz2, tar.gz, rar) and everything works like a charm. Also directories was extracted, even with multiple rar archives. Might be a problem with distribution packages or a problem finding the extract applications? Can you provide more informations? Maybe launching the application from a konsole hoping it is telling something interesting?

Maybe its the opensuse packages? I notice Pedro is also using opensuse 11.

Here's a test zip.

I've ran ark using the command line and tried extracting all the files into a directory. The progress bar appeared for a brief moment and then vanished, but no files were extracted. The command line remains empty.

Another problem is that the file size reports are inaccurately ginormous. It's saying that one of the files in the zip is 212 GiB!

The problem mentioned with files subfolders not being extracted directly is fixed in trunk. The linked zip file, however, can be confirmed to not work with the current ark. I will look into it.

Zip files did not work because only the selected files functionality was implemented, and selecting none simply did nothing. This has been fixed in trunk quite a few commits back, and the zip file supplied here also works fine.

The new Ark introduced in KDE4.x is a complete failure.

It fails extracting zips, fails opening rar archives, gets directory structure wrong and has 0 shell integration in dolphin or such an option. Nobody opens an archive with the extractor program, most of the time people just want to right click an archive and select "Extract to", or "Extract here", these are the actions that need to be introduced into dolphin.

I use Fedora 9 and am very disappointed of the extracting tool, having to do all the extractions from the console.

Sorry for the negativistic approach, but it just burns my fuses every time I use it.

Please try to think more as a user rather than a developper.

Thank you very much and I do appreciate your work!

Edward:
Thank you for informing about Ark being a complete failure. It is really the kind of input I was looking for.

It is the first time I hear of this problem, is the directory structure wrong? Ark from 4.0 uptil now has been in kind of a sorry state because it was left in the middle of development, but a lot of the things you describe are fixed for 4.2, including Dolphin integration.

Please tell me what version of Ark you are using and what kind of file you were opening. If this is indeed a new problem I would suggest you create a new bug report and not reply to an already closed one.
