While it's very good to have freedesktop.org standards implemented in KDE, certain types of standards cause problems and annoyance amongst users.

This is the case for http://standards.freedesktop.org/autostart-spec/autostart-spec-0.5.html, which specifies where autostart applications should reside.

Both Gnome and KDE 4 have implemented it, which leads to the behaviour that applications that have been selected to start automatically in GNOME also start up in KDE 4, which is very annoying and doesn't allow specific settings for different Desktop Environments. Various Posts in different forums prove that this behaviour is certainly *not* what users want.

While the underlying problem (no DE specific profiles possible) has to be solved by updating the freedesktop.org standard, there should be the option to use a KDE specific autostart system such as the old /.kde/Autostart directory.

At least it would be helpful to be able to configure the autostart items from kde.
Comment 2 Pino Toscano 2008-06-09 11:31:34 UTC
Please note that ~/.kde/Autostart is always used. (And if not, it is a bug.)
Comment 3 Johannes Tögel 2008-06-09 13:26:44 UTC
Well, ~/.kde/Autostart is used, but additionally, the directories specified in the freedesktop.org standard are used, which results in the situation that autostart entries created for/by other Desktop Environments are used in KDE 4. There should be a) an option to use ~/.kde/Autostart only, and b) the possibility to configure autostart entries in compliance with the freedesktop.org standard in a userfriendly way (such as a Systemsettings-Module).

I was having a problem with this as well. In the freedesktop.org standard it allows for OnlyShowIn/NotShowIn so I put OnlyShowIn=GNOME in gnome-do.desktop for instance and it does indeed work correctly (i.e. gnome-do doesn't start up in KDE and does in Gnome) but this must be done by hand.

So this is in fact a bug in GNOME and should be reported to the GNOME Bug-Tracker?
Comment 6 Adam Williamson 2008-09-10 23:38:22 UTC
I think there's definitely a bug in GNOME here. However, whether there's a bug in KDE depends on how it handles adding autostart entries.

When you add an autostart entry in KDE, does it place it in ~/.config/autostart or ~/.kde/Autostart ?

If it places it in ~/.config/autostart (and doesn't set a OnlyShowIn=KDE or something) and this is not configurable, I'd say that's a bug. If it's configurable, or if it places it in ~/.kde/Autostart by default, or it places it in .config but sets OnlyShowIn=KDE, I'd say KDE is behaving correctly and there's no bug.

I am going to see if there's a bug filed with GNOME yet.

I don't think there is a KDE bug in this report. And this report is just too generic.
